Kid's Corner

An experiment conducted on students showed that the colors red and yellow will cause a person's blood pressure to rise. The calmer colors of blue and green, and the neutral colors of white and black did not show any significant effect on blood pressure.

The color of the environment that we live in might have a significant effect on our moods and health. This field of study may also be useful in the advertising industry, where colors are used to create specific moods.

  • Daily Meditation

A daily meditation practice requires discipline and allocating time each day.
    1. Take time to settle in a quiet space, close your eyes.
    2. Acknowledge the surrounding sounds and then clear them from your mind.
    3. Focus on your breath and observe the air as it enters and exits your body.
    4. Repeat a mantra which is a word or sound while you clear your mind of all other thoughts and stressors.
    5. Practice this once or twice a day to lower blood pressure and stress hormones.

    The Silent Killer: HYPERTENSION

Have You Checked Your Blood Pressure Lately?

    Did You Know......

** 1 in 3 Americans have high blood pressure (77.9million)

** 69% of people who have a first heart attack

    ** 77% who have a first stroke

** 74% who have congestive heart failure

ALL of the above have blood pressure higher than 140/90 mm Hg

It's called the "Silent Killer" because many people don't even know they have it.  High blood pressure has no symptoms or warning signs. But when elevated blood pressure is accompanied by abnormal cholesterol and blood sugar levels, the damage to your arteries, kidneys, and heart accelerates exponentially. Fortunately, high blood pressure is easy to detect and treat. Sometimes people can keep blood pressure in a healthy range simply by making lifestyle changes, such as losing weight, increasing activity, and eating more healthfully. Simple changes in lifestyle like cutting out salt, caffiene, alcohol, tobacco, sugar and fats can help with lowering blood pressure and reduce your chances of a heart attack, stroke or heart failure!

SIX MUST HAVE FOODS TO LOWER BLOOD PRESSURE

    hypertension foods

    Let Food Be Thy Medicine

     1. CHOCOLATE: Eating a one-ounce square of dark chocolate daily can help lower blood pressure, especially in people who already have hypertension, according to Harvard researchers who analyzed 24 chocolate studies. Dark chocolate is high in flavonoids, natural compounds that cause dilation of the blood vessels. Look for chocolates that say they contain 50 to 70 percent cacao.
    2. BEETS: Drinking a glass of beet juice can lower blood pressure within just a few hours, according to a Queen Mary University of London study published last year in the American Heart Association journal Hypertension. The nitrate in the juice has the same effect as taking a nitrate tablet, the researchers found. Other nitrate-rich foods include spinach, lettuce, cabbage, carrots and, of course, whole beets.
    3. BERRIES: Just one serving of blueberries a week can help cut your risk of high blood pressure. Blueberries, as well as raspberries and strawberries, contain natural compounds called anthocyanins that protect against hypertension, according to a recent British and American study of about 157,000 men and women published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
    4. GRAINS: Having a bowl of breakfast cereal, especially whole-grain, high-fiber cereals like oatmeal, oat squares, bran flakes or shredded wheat, can reduce your chance of developing high blood pressure, Harvard University researchers recently found.
    5. POTATOES: A baked potato is high in potassium and magnesium, two important minerals that can help fight high blood pressure. Research shows that if Americans boosted their potassium intake, adult cases of high blood pressure could fall by more than 10 percent. As for magnesium, many older Americans fail to get enough in their diet, according to the National Institutes of Health. In addition to baked potatoes, here are some other foods high in both these minerals: halibut, spinach, bananas, soybeans, kidney beans and plain nonfat yogurt.
    6. SKIM MILK: Eating low-fat dairy products can reduce a woman's risk of developing hypertension. That's the conclusion of a 2008 study of nearly 30,000 women with an average age of 54. The women who ate the most low-fat dairy products- yogurt, low-fat cottage cheese, frozen yogurt, skim or low-fat milk - were 11 percent less likely to develop high blood pressure.
Study Finds Some Alternative Therapies Lower Blood Pressure

     AMA

The American Heart Association has identified several alternative therapies that could lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension.

An expert panel targeted patients with blood pressure and they published their findings in the journal Hypertension.

Experts were surprised that four weeks of isometric hand-grip exercises caused a 10 percent lowering of both blood pressure numbers. They note, however, that patients whose readings are 180/110 mmHg or higher should avoid isometric exercises.

Isometric Hand Grip Exercises Lower Blood Pressure

hand grip exercises Add This Exercise to Your Routine to Lower Blood Pressure

Isometric hand grip exercises entail grabbing an object with the strength of the forearms, then keeping it stationary. In addition to lowering blood pressure, these types of exercises can help athletes like golfers and baseball players build wrist and forearm strength for striking a ball. Additionally, people can build hand strength for daily activities like opening jars or yard work. There are a number of different isometric hand grip exercises that a person can perform to build forearm strength and lower blood pressure.

    Ball Squeeze
The ball squeeze exercise requires only a tennis ball or any other small ball. Hold the ball in one hand and squeeze it for 60 to 90 seconds. Place the ball in your other hand and repeat the squeeze for the same amount of time. Repeat the exercise three times with each hand.
    Athletic Gripper Hold

Athletic grippers can be found at nearly any sporting good store. Grippers generally come in different resistances so you'll have to choose one appropriate for you. Ideally, you should use one that you are able to squeeze for two minutes before your muscles fatigue. Hold the athletic gripper in one hand and squeeze it for two minutes then switch hands and repeat the exercise. Complete the exercise twice with each hand.

    Weight Hold

The weight hold is a challenging exercise. Hold a heavy dumbbell in each hand with your arms by your sides. Simply maintain this position as long as you can. Set the weights down and allow your hands to relax for two minutes then repeat the isometric hold.
