The Kitchen Backsplash

In a kitchen, the cabinets, the backsplash and the countertops together share the spotlight. All three are equally important in the overall look of your kitchen. So which one do you pick first?  Designers will differ on the answer to this, but in my opinion the cabinets should be your first selection.  After that, choose which ever is most important to YOU.  Both surfaces meet at the wall line, so whichever you choose first, both of them  should coordinate, complement or enhance each other.

I've worked with many clients who have chosen the countertops first, but I've also worked with a few who have fallen in love with a particular look for the backsplash and that look became the inspiration.  It's easy to see how that can happen with all the gorgeous selections available.  So whether you're remodeling your kitchen, building new, or just thinking of updating your existing backsplash, here are a few ideas to get your inspiration started.

Glass tile continues to be popular.  Within the last several years the options have quadrupled and the prices have become much more affordable.  Glass can be stunning on it's own or combined with stone or metal.  I love glass, it gives that "liquid", translucent look that nothing else can give.

Subway tile is another classic that, as the word implies, never goes out of style, whether using them in glass or porcelain.

With a little imagination, you can design a custom backsplash using a combination of tiles, allowing you to achieve a designer look and better control the cost.

Sometimes, the tile itself can be the star of the show.

Of course a backsplash doesn't have to be made of tile!  Stainless is perfect for a more contemporary look.

Similar to stainless, is tin.  I love the reflective look of copper or tin tiles.
