Creating an Accent Wall
There's no denying that paint is the most popular wall treatment out there! And with good reason. It's economical and the colors available are limitless. In addition, it's an easy DIY project for most...from the novice to the pro. So creating an accent wall with paint is the easiest way to go.
Wallpaper is also a standard when creating an accent wall. Although, hanging wallpaper is a little more tricky for the DIY novice. But, even if you have to hire a professional, the vast variety of patterns to choose from can result in a spectacular, one-of-a-kind accent wall that will be well worth the cost.
But paint and wallpaper are not the ONLY options for creating an accent wall. If you're willing to step outside the box, you can transform a space with a wall that is unique and stunning.
Here are 10 alternative wall treatments that are sure to bring style and diversity to your home.
Tile
Tiling a wall is not uncommon...if you're doing a bathroom or kitchen. For some reason though, most people don't think about using tile in the living room or bedrooms. But no room is off limits. Tile comes in every shape color and size imaginable and can add glamor and texture to any room. The design possibilities are endless.

Wood Flooring
Here's another surface most people don't consider for walls...wood flooring. Whether it's real wood or a manufactured product, the affect is stunning. It's a surface that will bring "warmth" to any room, any style.

|
The Stone WallIf texture is what you're looking for, few treatments do it better than stone. Like tile and wood, the options are limitless. And while it can be a more costly alternative, the look is unparallelled! A stone look can be achieved using real stone, cultured stone or even faux panels that are more economical and easy to install, like these from FauxPanels.com

Tin Panels
This treatment has got to be one of my favorites. I LOVE the look of unpainted metal tins. I love them on the ceiling, the back splash and definitely an accent wall.
Then I see this bedroom below, with an amazing accent wall done completely in a mosaic of painted tin tiles. Breathtaking!

Here's a simpler version made out of faux tin tiles from Lowe's or Home Depot sprayed with coordinating colors.

Shutters If tin isn't your thing, you can achieve a similar look with shutters. In this picture below, the shutters have been painted in various colors. However, you can also paint them all the same color, for a wall that is more textural than colorful. Either way, it's a stunning affect. You can purchase shutters very inexpensively at any Goodwill or Habitat for Humanity ReStore in your area. A similar affect can be accomplished with doors.

Molding
Molding is an easy and basic way to add a little interest to your walls. Cover an entire wall, and you have a classic focal point. The molding can be painted in he same color of the wall or in a contrasting color.
Depending on your level of experience, it can be a simple DIY project. Click Here for instructions on how to install a grid like the one below.
Picture molding plays a major role in giving this staircase a more classic, traditional look. For a more dramatic look, imagine if the inside of each block was painted in the same white of the molding.

Framed Mirrors
You simply can't go wrong with mirrors. They're the "little black dress" of home decor. They're reflective powers give the illusion of space, and provide a sparkle of glamor.
For an accent wall, I like the idea of framed mirrors. Below are three gorgeous examples that any carpenter or handy man can replicate in your home.
|
Wall of Art
Instead of mirrors, you can also create an accent wall with framed art. The affect can be stunning...although, done incorrectly, it can also look chaotic. The trick is to keep the pieces large and hang them close together as consistently as possible.

So why not give an old room a lift? Consider an accent wall...and step outside the box!
