Fall Decorating Ideas

If you're like me, you love your home to be decorated for the season.  Because, somehow, a decorated home makes you smile more often and is a subtle reminder of the promise in the air.

But the decorating itself can be a stressful undertaking.  The mere thought of pulling out the holiday boxes can make the stress level rise a notch or two.  Fortunately, it doesn't have to be SO complicated, because oftentimes it's not the quantity, but the quality that makes the biggest difference.

So if you're  weary about decorating for the fall, here are a few simple, classic and elegant ideas that will carry you through the entire holiday season.

The Pumpkin
The wonderful thing about pumpkins is that they're SO versatile. They fit right in whether decorating in October, November or December!  Also, I love the fact that they come directly from nature.  In addition, they're readily available and economical.

I'm particularly partial to white pumpkins.  They're stunning in this simple centerpiece of three wrapped in berry vines.

I can't imagine WHY anyone wouldn't use the fireplace to enjoy a warm and bright fire.  But if you don't, here's a great idea for decorating that big black hole...Pumpkins!

Sometimes, neither a white pumpkin NOR an orange punkin will fit the look you're going for.  Luckily, pumpkins are easily painted, stenciled or glazed.

Here's an idea you can use inside OR outside.  Stack at least 3 pumpkins in the form of a pyramid on top of a decorative pot or urn for a dramatic "welcome" on your porch or entry.

Wreaths

Even more versatile than a pumpkin is the wreath. I especially love the berry wreath.  A berry wreath can be displayed all year round, but specially during the holidays...October through December.

During this season, consider temporarily replacing the existing art that hangs over your mantle with a big, beautiful wreath.  Make sure it's big enough to fit the space.  If you have a mirror over your mantle, you can display the wreath directly on tip of it for a more dramatic look.

Place anything from a candle to a candy dish in the middle of a wreath an it becomes an instant ready-made centerpiece.

Nuts, Beans & Fruits

You don't have to go much farther than the grocery store for some fabulous natural decor for the holidays:  nuts, acorns, walnuts, chestnuts, hazelnuts...

And don't forget beans and fruits.  Use them to fill jars and platters for a classic festive display.

Candles

Candles are a holiday basic.  They can be placed in any room.  If you already display candles in your decor, consider temporarily replacing them with ones in a more appropriate color to fit the holidays.  Or, you can embellish your current ones with fall foliage or nuts.

One of the easiest, most versatile and economical ways to decorate for the fall is with candles in glass containers like the ones below.

Choose candles in a neutral color like ivory, then fill the container with color.  Use nuts, beans, corn, candy, etc.  You can change the filler as desired:  candy for Halloween, nuts for Thanksgiving, pine needles for Christmas!

I'm loving this pear centerpiece.  Notice it incorporates both wax pears and real pears.  Genius!  How simple and elegant is that!?

Floral and Foliage

In keeping with our "natural" theme for fall decorating, we can't disregard the impact of fall foliage.  Other than Spring, Fall provides us with limitless opportunities to enjoy the beauty of nature and it's array of colors and textures.  All you need to do is step outside into your garden.  If you don't have a garden, you can still find countless options for foliage at any nursery or home improvement store.

And of course, there's nothing wrong with using silk foliage.  It certainly is more practical and can be used again next year.

And while you're out in the garden, pick some leaves to decorate candles, lanterns, etc.

If you currently display greenery on your table or shelf, purchase silk flowers of your choice in a fall color and insert them into your existing greenery.  This will add a touch of fall color to your decor.  When the season is over, simply remove them for use again next year.

Fresh flowers are always a treat!  Below in this Martha Stewart creation, they are displayed in a pumpkin vase. Gorgeous!

As the days get shorter and the temperatures get lower, we'll be spending more and more time inside.  So take the time to add a little holiday decor to your home, because a decorated home will almost certainly make you SMILE!  And isn't that what it's all about?

Hope I've inspired!
