6 Essentials For Your Home Office

If you have a student living at home, then a desk in which to do their homework is an essential.  But it's not enough to just have a desk, you have to make the space feel comfortable and above all, easy and conducive to learning.  Here are a few ideas on how to make that happen.

1. Plenty of surface space

The desk should not be cluttered with too many items.  There should be plenty of area for spreading out the books and papers.

2. Plenty of light

Of course natural light is best.   But  I do think every desk, if possible, should have a lamp.  No matter how adequate the overhead lighting is, you can't beat task lighting for doing tasks.

3. A Bulletin Board

No matter what the age, all of us can always benefit from subtle reminders.  To me, that's what a bulletin board is all about.  Tack on everything from mementos, to reminders, to inspirations.  Because some things just need to be where you can see them!

The challenging thing about bulletin boards is that, after a while, they can start looking unkempt and cluttered.  At the point you see that your board is already looking full, start taking an item down for every one that you put up.

4. A Trash Bin

A desk needs a trash bin...an adequate trash bin, to be specific, and an attractive one.  If in your home the desk trash bin gets a lot of use, then the bin needs to be bigger than those small ones they sell at office stores.  Invest in a larger more adequate one.  PLUS, make sure that it's attractive.  A bigger bin can become an eye sore if it's not pretty.  Get creative!

5. Storage

The amount of storage you need will depend on the use of your desk.  But always, you'll need some storage.  Decide how much you'll need and supply it by using bins, shelves or furniture.

6. A Comfortable Chair

Sometimes, the perfect, pretty chair is not necessarily the most comfortable.  And comfort should be priority.  Luckily, it's not necessary to forfeit either one to get both!
