What to Hang Above the Bed

As with any large wall, the wall behind your bed is one of the biggest challenges to decorate, yet one of the most important.  It is the focal point of the room...or at least part of it!  In most bedrooms, the bed and the linen are the unmistakable focal point.  And as you look at the bed, your eyes will naturally travel UP...which makes above the bed, also a focal point.

What you decide to hang over your bed will depend on many things.  There are however, a few general guidelines that can help you decide.

Large Art

The important word here is "large".    If you have the vertical space, large is what will get you the biggest impact.

That's not to say that a smaller art piece won't work, but if you want impact, you have to go big!

A Set of Frames

This solution is a classic.  In my opinion, all the frames should be the same.  When placed within 2 to 3 inches from each other, it gives the affect of a single large art.  You can frame just about anything.  The important thing is that they all relate.

style at home

OK, here goes...I'm going to say it!  I know a lot of my clients will totally disagree, but... if you're hanging a set of frames over the bed in the master bedroom, don't put your kid's pictures in the frames.  Your children's pictures can go elsewhere in the house.  Your master is just for you and your partner.

Of course it's not always necessary to create a "square" configuration with the frames.  You can also create a gallery to cover most of the wall.  But again, they should be spaced 2-3" apart and must all relate to each other either in color, shape or subject.

Go Round

I am particularly partial to round and oval shapes.  They're softer, more fluid, making them perfect for the bedroom.

A round mirror over the bed is a striking classic.  You should get the largest that the budget will allow and one that will fit the space.

You can also achieve the round shape with a collection of plates or small round mirrors.

The Canopy

I just love this treatment.  You can be as formal or as casual as you like, depending on the fabric and design.  Either way, it's major impact!

A canopy works best if your ceiling is at least 11 feet.

Wallpaper

Here's a way you won't need to hand anything above the bed!  Wallpaper is on the rise and you can find some amazing patterns to choose from.

Wallpaper only the wall behind the bed.  Choose a wallpaper that's dramatic with a large pattern, one you like looking at.

Even if you decide to change the placement of the bed at a later time, the wallpapered wall will continue to be an accent that brings interest and color to the decor.

A Shelf

A shelf is a wonderful way to add dimension and interest, while at the same time incorporating storage if necessary.

room decorating ideas

It's best to keep what you place on the shelf to a minimum...too many items will clutter the look.  Art in varying heights that has been placed on the shelf and leaning against the wall, combined with a few accessories, is usually a very effective look.

Decals

Decals are most popular for children's rooms, where you'll find an unlimited selection to choose from.  But you can also use them for guest rooms or master bedrooms.  They're an easy and economical way to add a little pizazz to any room.

Although you will find decals at Micheal's, Hobby Lobby or any craft store, your best bet is to search online where there are countless alternatives.
