Decorating Around Your Flat Screen TV

I have found that one of the biggest decorating challenges is how to decorate around the flat screen TV.

For years now, the TV has been as necessary in the home as a computer or a phone.  And for years now, it continues to be an often unsightly item in any decor!  But there are ways to decorate around it which help to camouflage the big black box and draw the attention away from it.

How you decide to decorate your TV wall will depend on several things...what the TV sits on,  the size of the TV, and the size and shape of the wall...  Here are a few ideas that might inspire you to think outside the box.

The Picture/Art Gallery

Hanging multiple frames is one of the best ways to surround the TV.  The trick is to create a cohesive gallery which includes the TV.   The frames can house family pictures, art, or both.

Here are a few guidelines:

  • The frames should be in a variety of sizes, and don't be afraid to go large.
  • When framing photos they should all be matted.
  • If you have a picture that you like but is too small, you can take it to any photo department for scanning and enlarging.
  • Try getting all the pictures printed in either black & white or sepia (brownish tint)...either will give the room a more "calmer" feeling than color prints.
  • The frames don't all need to be the same, but they all should be the same color or a combination of the same colors.

This gallery below is a wonderful example of how you can use different items in varying sizes and shapes to create interest and balance.  To help in creating a gallery around your TV, first measure the wall and "lay" the measurement on the floor...start laying the frames on the floor until you're happy with the placement of the frames...make sure you also include your TV in the gallery.  Then take a picture of it with your phone and start hanging.  Start with the center piece  (the picture will help you remember what goes where).

Flank Bookshelves on Both Sides
Flank bookshelves on both sides of the TV to help frame the TV and balance a large wall.

Custom Cabinets
Custom cabinets are an investment that allows for maximum versatility...you can design the cabinet based on your specific storage needs.

Another example of custom cabinets, this one more contemporary.

Shelves
You can also use shelves or a combination of shelves and art...

Talk about custom...I Love this Candice Olson room.  I really like the look of the 2 drawer chests side-by-side with the TV in the center.  Although this one is custom, you can create the same look using 2 separate chests and a custom glass top that is cut to fit over both.

A Paint Treatment
Here's a gorgeous wall treatment that is simple yet has a big impact. Any good carpenter can install the wood grid.  The wall behind the grid in the room below has been painted in two colors, but using a single color would look just as good.

Decals
Decals!  I'm always amazed at the impact they bring to any room.  This one below is perfect because the decal is large enough to fill the entire wall.

Barn Doors
I have to say though, I think my favorite wall treatment is the barn doors!  When closed, it looks like the entrance to another room!  How cool is that!

If you have a TV wall and you're not happy with it, consider changing things up a bit...
Hope I've inspired
!
