Getting Ready For The Holidays
|
Reluctantly, yet excitedly, I concede that it is time to start thinking about the holidays ahead...from Halloween through New Year.
Over the years, I have learned that, while I "feel" the utmost zest for over-the-top entertaining, I always fall back on comfort and simplicity. Here are a few suggestions with both of those in mind.
Keep the Menu Simple The holidays are all about being festive, not stressed. They're about spending time with family, not hours in the kitchen. So unless you enjoy your time in the kitchen, keep the menu simple and stick with what you're comfortable making.
The Buffet is Served! Instead of a sit-down dinner, consider serving a buffet. Buffets are certainly more casual. They also allow for more mingling of the guests...you can have dinner with uncle Charlie and dessert with cousin Jane.
Go Pot Luck It doesn't have to be everybody who brings food. Make a list of the friends you feel comfortable asking, then ask! I think pot luck a a wonderful concept. It makes people feel like they've contributed to the success of the party...which they have!
All White Dinnerware I love the classic elegance of white dinnerware. It's simple and unpretentious, yet sophisticated. This year, why not do things a little differently? Go all white with your dishes and serving pieces, then decorate in colors appropriate to the holiday. You can find sets that are very economical, but even if you splurge, they're an investment for years to come.
A Double-Duty Centerpiece You can't go wrong with a centerpiece that is made of fruits, vegis or nuts. They're natural and beautiful, but also practical...you can eat it later.
Music is a Must Have you ever been to a gathering where there was no music? It drives me nuts! Music is a must at any gathering. It should be subtle in the background...not so loud that conversation is difficult. Any cable provider has a "Sounds of the Season" station that does all the work of choosing the right tunes.
Scent Sets the Mood Do not underestimate the influence of scent in setting the right mood, and candles are perfect for the task...apple cider, cinnamon, pine. I'm particularly partial to anything from Thymes, but any home fragrance line will do the trick. Your guests will no doubt remember how wonderful your home smelled.
Get the Kids Involved One of the best ways to get the kids involved with your holiday entertaining is to have them design the invitations. Most kids today are very computer literate, and there are many programs and methods of designing a simple card for any holiday....give them a few guidelines and let them get creative! It'll get them involved and feeling like they've contributed in a big way. Meet and Greet If possible, you should be the first person your guests greet, so keep your ears tuned for the doorbell. But if you can't be there to greet when they arrive, do make it a point to do as soon as possible.
This year, shake things up bit! Hope I've Inspired! .
