Downtown Treasure Hunting with The Red Deer Foodie by Shannon Yacyshyn Working downtown, I love actually getting to know what IS downtown; I spend my breaks and lunch hours exploring the streets and discovering all the hidden treasures that this community has to offer! Fellow Red Deerians who don't work downtown are always amazed when I share with them all the great finds that I've dug out of the wood-work on Alexander Way, Ross Street or Little Gaetz. One of downtown's most precious gems has got to be Ten Thousand Villages on Alexander Way (48 St., near the corner of 50 Ave). Ten Thousand Villages is the oldest and largest Fair Trade organization in North America, selling artisan-crafted personal accessories, home decor and gift items from around the globe. They also are a member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), a coalition of handicraft and agricultural producer organizations, and Fair Trade organizations from both the North and the South. When I think of Fair Trade goods I always think of coffee, cocoa and spices! And their store in Red Deer does not disappoint with their selection of gluten free items, grains, baking supplies, oils and chocolate. Using ingredients from Ten Thousand Villages, I've created Paleo Fruit & Nut Bars which are a great no-bake treat that you can whip up in less than 20 minutes! They are full of protein, fibre and vitamins, and are a great snack-on-the-go for busy people.
