Congratulations to Joanne Batson! 

 

Joanne Batson, Chief Executive Officer for the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore, was named the 2013 Network Leader of the Year at the Feeding America National Executive Directors' Forum that took place this week in Nashville. The award is given to the year's most outstanding leader among the 202 food banks across the nation that makes up the Feeding America network.

Carrollton Civic League

 

Carrollton Civic League will meet 7 p.m. Monday, May 6th, 2013 in the Conference Room of Sentara St. Luke's, 20209 Sentara Way just off Brewer's Neck Blvd., Carrollton, VA 23314. Guest presenter will be a representative from Isle of Wight County Planning and Zoning who will update us on the status of the various ongoing real estate development projects in the greater Carrollton area.

Sundays at Four

Concert Series

 

Christ Church, Smithfield, invites you to join them for the 2012-2013 "Sundays at Four" performance series. Christ Church, along with Trinity United Methodist and the Isle of Wight Arts League sponsor this wonderful and eclectic series of performances.

  • Duo Recital - October 14, 2012 at Trinity United Methodist, Smithfield. Music of Beethoven, Debussy and Rachmaninoff. Lee Jordan-Anders, piano and Jeffrey Phelps, cello.
  • ODU's Diehn Chorale  - February 17, 2013 at Christ Church, Smithfield.  3:30 Pre-Concert by Westside Elementary School Chorus.
  • Meet George Gershwin - March 17, 2013 at Trinity United Methodist, Smithfield. The life and music of George Gershwin. Barton Kuebler, piano.
  • Solo Youth Recital - May 19, 2013 at Trinity United Methodist, Smithfield. Mackenzie Cower, rising junior at University of Michigan, oboe and English horn.
  • Terrific Teen Talent - August 4, 2013 at Christ Church, Smithfield. An annual showcase of six amazingly talented teen musicians.

Basic Homebuyers Class:  Tuesday May 7 from 6:00-7:00 pm: Learn the in's and out's of what it takes to buy a home from a veteran of the field. 


Book Club Wednesday:  May 8th 2:00-3:00 pm. The Carrollton Book Club will be discussing   Breaking Night: A Memoir of Forgiveness, Survival, and  My Journey from Homeless to Harvard by Liz Murray.

 

Mommy & Me Tea Party:  Saturday, May 11th 11:00 am. Join us for tea, dress up fancy, make a mother's day craft, have fun, and make some new friends!  School age program.  Registration is required as space is limited.

Isle of Wight County Museum

Events & Announcements

 

Duck and Cover!  The Cold War:  

The Cold War, 1947 to 1991, was a period of sustained political and military tension between the powers of the West and the communist world.  From 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, Duck and Cover!, an educational program for children ages 7 to 12, elaborates upon this era of history.
 
Cost is $10 per child. Registration and pre-payment are required. 

Herb Tour of Fort Boykin:  

At 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, visitors to Fort Boykin can learn about native edibles with naturalist and master gardener Mike Rasnake who will lead this walking tour.

 

 

Participants will identify edible plants native to Virginia before they enjoy a treat of Fort Boykin's flavors.

 

Cost for the program is $10 per person. Please wear comfortable walking shoes.

 

Reservations are required.

 

Free Walking Tours at Fort Huger:  

At 10 a.m. on March 16, April 20, May 18, June 15, July 20, Aug. 17, Sept. 21, Oct. 19, Nov. 16 and Nov. 22, visitors to Fort Huger are invited for a free walking tour of the site to learn the significance of this gateway to the Confederate capital. Led by local historian Albert Burckard, this tour will last approximately one hour.

 

Reservations are not required. Please wear comfortable walking shoes.

Smithfield Kiwanis Charity Golf Tournament

The Smithfield Kiwanis will hold their 31st Annual Golf Tournament on Friday, May 3rd, 11:30 am at Cypress Creek Golfer's Club.  Every dollar raised will directly benefit children in Isle of Wight.

Girl Scouts to Host Helping Hands Food Drive

May 4, 2013

 

The Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast are excited to share an announcement of our partnership with TowneBank for the up-and-coming Helping Hands Food Drive. This is a great partnership, as TowneBank and the Girl Scouts share similar community service philosophies.

 The drive will take place at all local area Walmarts to benefit local area food banks on May 4, from 9 a.m.-noon.

 

GS Food Drive 2013 In preparation for this Council-wide event, Girl Scouts are holding collection drives at local schools, churches and other venues in the community to collect food items to bring to collection sites on May 4.

The Virginia Brass Quintet

May 5, 2013

 

May 5th, 3:00 pm:  The Virginia Brass Quintet - an outstanding, professional Brass Quintet which will play music covering the last 5 centuries. This group played a Christmas concert at St. Luke's to a full house.  Hosted at Christ Episcopal Church, 111 S. Church St., Smithfield.  Admission at door: Adult $10.00, Student $5.00.
