- Terrific Teen Talent - August 4, 2013 at Christ Church, Smithfield. An annual showcase of six amazingly talented teen musicians.

Isle of Wight County Museum
Park Day at Fort Boykin: On Saturday, April 6, history buffs and preservationists from around the country will team up with the Civil War Preservation Trust to help clean and restore America's priceless battlefields, cemeteries and shrines. The nationwide effort - dubbed Park Day - is underwritten with a grant from History, formerly The History Channel. Park Day is also presented in partnership with Take Pride in America, a division of the U.S. Department of the Interior.
New to Genealogy: Steps to Conducting Research: At 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, Rod McDonald of the Tidewater Genealogical Society will offer a seminar on how to research your family roots.
This seminar - New to Genealogy: Steps to Conducting Research - will offer suggestions on the best ways to get started as well as the resources to make the process easier.
Homeschool Day:
From 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 19, Isle of Wight County's Historic Resources Division will host a day for homeschoolers at its historic sites.
Homeschoolers of all ages can visit the Isle of Wight County Museum, Boykin's Tavern, Fort Huger, Fort Boykin and Nike Park for a selection of fun and engaging activities that highlight the history of Isle of Wight County and Virginia.
Siege of Suffolk Lecture:
In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the Isle of Wight County Sesquicentennial Committee will host a lecture on the Siege of Suffolk at 7:00 p.m. Monday, April 22, at the Isle of Wight County Museum.
Curatorial Talk: Smithfield Hams: At 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, Isle of Wight County Museum Curator Tracey Neikirk will host a talk on the history of Smithfield ham.
Free Walking Tours at Fort Huger:
At 10 a.m. on March 16, April 20, May 18, June 15, July 20, Aug. 17, Sept. 21, Oct. 19, Nov. 16 and Nov. 22, visitors to Fort Huger are invited for a free walking tour of the site to learn the significance of this gateway to the Confederate capital. Led by local historian Albert Burckard, this tour will last approximately one hour.
Reservations are not required. Please wear comfortable walking shoes.

For Peeps Sake! It's Piggy Cottontail &The Great Egg Hunt

Since his good friend the Easter Bunny is very busy with jelly bean production this time of year, Piggy Cottontail is pleased to make an appearance at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 30, at Boykin's Tavern for Piggy Cottontail and the Great Egg Hunt.
The event will commence with a traditional egg hunt on the tavern lawn. Afterwards, the springtime fun will continue with crafts, storytime, games and a snack. The Lowe Farm will also display heritage livestock from their farm.
And, of course, there will be plenty of time for photo opportunities!
Cost is $5 per child. Reservations are required.

Spring BBQ Benefit Fundraiser
April 6, 2013
Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department will host it's Spring fundraising BBQ on Saturday, April 6th, 2013, Noon to 6 p.m. at Fire Station 10, 15020 Carrollton Blvd., Route 17, in Isle of Wight County, VA. 23314.
Guests are welcome to delicious home cooked food prepared and served at the fire station by our volunteers. Menu also includes fried chicken, Brunswick stew, baked beans, cole slaw, iced tea and coffee.
Advance tickets for $8.00 will be available at many Carrollton businesses. $10.00 at the door on the day of the BBQ. Takeout meals also available.

Great American Clean Up
April 6, 2013
In a County wide effort to celebrate Earth Day for the month of April, many community organizations are joining in for the Great American Clear Up. It will be held April 6, Saturday from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm, and again May 4th in Windsor. The target areas for April 6 are routes 10, 258 and 17. With the activities in Smithfield during April the timing is crucial and we want to celebrate as well as stimulate awareness for Earth Day--all year long if possible.
Meet at the Isle or Wight Courthouse at 8:00 am to get directions, vests, gloves and other equipment as needed.
LUNCH AFTER AT THE COURTHOUSE!
If you cannot make it to the Courthouse, walk outside. Be sure that your streets and neighborhoods are pristine and an area of which you can be proud.

The 2013 Virginia Historic Garden Week

Tickets are now on sale for the 80th Historic Garden Week featuring six historic homes and gardens in Historic Smithfield, Virginia. This years theme is: "Smithfield: Simply Southern". Tours will take place from 10 am until 5 pm. Tickets are $35 on day of tour and $15 for single-site admission. Children 6-12 are $17; 5 and under are free.
