Midwest Hellenic History Tournament Held;
Saint George Stars Repeat as Champs
Nine teams vied for top honors at the 2nd Annual AHEPA Midwest Hellenic History Tournament, held at the Loyola University Chicago School of Law, Nov. 14.  AHEPA Lakeshore Chapter 205, Chicago, organized the tournament.

The Saint George Stars comprised of Konstantinos Morakalis, Christos Nikas, and Nicholas Tomaras, captured first place and successfully defended last year's championship. The team received $3,000 ($1,000 per student) and each student received a trophy. The first place "Hellenic Cup" trophy will reside with the team's sponsor, which is Lakeshore Chapter 205.  Saint Peter and Paul GOYA, a team comprised of Elias Anderson, Mitry Anderson, and Julia Economy, placed second. The team received $1,500 ($500 per student). The championship match was a tight one with only two points separating first from second place.

AHEPA congratulates the finalists and commends all the teams that competed.

AHEPA Yankee District 7 founded the AHEPA Hellenic History Tournament, which is in its seventh year of hosting teams from the New England area.

Greece will have to pass more laws for Friday green light on bailout tranche  Ekathimerini (Nov. 16)  Greece will have to pass by Thursday night any extra legislation needed to secure the release of its next bailout sub-tranche, sources in Brussels have told Kathimerini.  It is unlikely that Tuesday's Euro Working Group (EWG) will lead to officials giving the green light for the 2-billion-euro instalment being released, which means that the technical experts who advise the euro zone's finance ministers will convene again on Friday to take their decision...read more

Archaeologists Unearth "Greek Pompeii" in Sicily History (Nov. 10)  As reported by London's Independent newspaper, archaeologists unearthing the lost ancient Greek city of Selinunte on Sicily's southwest coast have found a city frozen in time, little different from the day 2,500 years ago when it was suddenly attacked and its residents massacred and enslaved.  The allure of Sicily's beauty is nothing new. Around 650 B.C. the Mediterranean island seduced a band of colonists from the port of Megara in ancient Greece who settled near the mouth of a small river on the southwest coast...read more

Spy party: Tuxedos, martinis and some of the greatest heroes
of World War II  Washington Post (Nov. 9)  Army Maj. Frank A. Gleason's small unit was facing an advancing Japanese army in China in December 1944 when he made a judgment call: Rather than let 50,000 tons of ammunition and weapons fall into enemy hands, they'd blow it all up.  The fiery chain reaction of explosions, Gleason recalled, went on for three days. It was a highlight of a long deployment in which Gleason's unit detonated more than 150 bridges and an assortment of river ferries, locomotives, barracks and weapons stockpiles during one of the great sabotage missions of the World War II...read more
