Greece crisis: PM Tsipras tells creditors to 'get real' - BBC NEWS - June 15 - Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has said his government will wait patiently for international creditors to become "realistic", after talks on a debt deal in  Brussels failed.  Mr Tsipras rejected demands for pension cuts, citing his country's dignity.  Time is running out for Greece to unlock bailout funds from the EU and IMF and a European Commission spokesman said "significant gaps" remained... read more

Burned Bones in Alexander the Great Family Tomb Give Up Few Secrets - LIVESCIENCE - June 11 - It's a mystery worthy of Sherlock Holmes, with a backstory that puts "Game of Thrones" to shame: Who was laid to rest in a lavish,  gold-filled Macedonian tomb near Vergina, Greece? The tomb, discovered in 1977, might be the final resting place of Philip II of Macedon, conqueror of Greece and father of Alexander the Great, who would push his father's empire to the edge of India.  Or, it might be the grave of the distinctly less impressive Philip III Arrhidaios (also written as Arrhidaeus), the half brother of, and figurehead successor to, Alexander the Great...read more

The Incredible History of a Greek Jewish Shul in NYC - JEWISH LINK - June 11 - Recently, strings of Greek, Israeli and American flags danced in the breeze over a Lower East Side block. The air smelled of honey. Long lines of people waited to nosh on baklava and biscochos, a traditional  Sephardic cookie. Under a big banner reading YASOU! a diverse crowd of Jews, Latinos, Chinese-Americans-along with the typical mix of white-sneaker-wearing fanny-pack-sporting tourists and local hipsters with expensive haircuts-listened to live bands rocking out with ouds and daoulis...read more

It's time for Israel to stop neglecting Cyprus - HAARETZ - June 15 - It may sometimes seem the world is increasingly antagonistic toward Israel, but Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades' visit to Jerusalem this week should remind Israelis that there are still allies to be found, even in the Middle East. One of them lies a mere 200 kilometers from the beaches of Haifa...read more (subscription required)

Doctors at state-run hospitals at risk of burnout - EKATHIMERINI - June 14 - After spending a decade on the front lines of one of Athens's biggest state-run hospitals, a 46-year-old neurologist who wished to remain unnamed finally decided to hand in her resignation and quit the "coal mine," as she and her colleagues referred to their workplace. Speaking to Kathimerini recently, she said that she had always wanted to be a doctor at a hospital. She loved the challenge of the emergency room, working with colleagues who were just as committed as she was and constantly expanding her knowledge and expertise. Even at the start of her hospital career, she had to accept that state hospitals are notoriously understaffed and she would have to be ready to do as many double shifts as needed...read more
