 Hi Everyone!

Welcome to April's installation of news from the team at AbleChildAfrica!

We are pleased to give you an update on the work at ANDY and their Sports for Health project, a fantastic project that has touched many lives and carried out excellent work. It's also an exciting time here in the AbleChildAfrica office, with a new addition to our team and the Live Below the Line campaign well under way with excellent reactions so far!

We also had an amazing time at the London Marathon this year and could not be more impressed with our runners!  So scroll down to get reading about all our news!

Thanks for your support and happy reading!

ANDY- Sports for Health

As our partner ANDY comes to the end of the innovative Comic Relief funded Sports for Health Project, we bring you reports from the project's participants and ANDY's Monitoring and Evaluation Officer Nancy Nteere on some of the successes over the past three years.

''I can sincerely say that ANDY has had a great impact in my life, I would never had dreamt that with my disability, I could sharpen my swimming skills nor work in an organisation, these two aspects and many more have made me proud to be part of the project''  Jeremiah Nyamongo (31), ANDY Sports for Health participant.

Amber is Living Below the Line!

This week Amber is taking part in Live Below the Line (and the rest of us will shortly follow next week!) Here's why she chose to take part:

I wanted to do this challenge to raise awareness about the struggles that face millions of disabled women, men and children face every day in parts of Africa. AbleChildAfrica is a fantastic NGO that designs and delivers innovative projects with Africa led partners on the ground, to ensure that disabled kids and young people can access the opportunities that they deserve.  All too often, disabled kids and young people are forgotten about but AbleChildAfrica wants to make sure that their rights are realised and their needs are at the top of everyone's agenda.

Disabled kids in East Africa are amongst some of the world's most vulnerable and marginalised children and can often have complex healthcare, educational, social and infrastructural needs that can be very costly.  But when your whole community lives on under £1 a day, how can these needs be met by the community alone?  Ask yourself, how easy would the choice between sending your child to a school that teaches sign language so that she could learn how to communicate or making sure your family of 6 has a well-balanced diet be fore you?  If you had to choose between paying for your son to see a physiotherapist to learn how to walk or paying for your child's education, can you imagine how hard that decision would be to make?  These are real choices that have to be made by parents and family members in East Africa but that thankfully, we don't have to make here in the UK.'

London Marathon 2014!

The 13th of April was a lovely sunny Sunday, the AbleChildAfrica team went down early to mile 14 of the marathon to set up our AbleChildAfrica cheering station (and hopefully find a patch of sun).  We were already starting to feel nervous for our amazing 23 runners who were running for us, especially when the professional athletes ran by us looking calm and collected.  Amber even managed to snap a great action shot of Mo Farrah whizzing by!

We are all so proud of our runners, all finishing with excellent times and meeting your fundraising targets- many even exceeding them!  We'd like to give a special shout out to our trustee Alanzo who finished with an amazing time of 3 hours 30 mins! Go Alanzo!
