Hi!

Welcome to another round of news from AbleChildAfrica.  This month has been an busy one for the staff team, with visits to all of our partners in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.  In this edition, you can read about our new Programme Officer Yana Zayed's first trip to East Africa and tales from her travels!

There are also updates from USDC in Uganda who are now coming to the end of the first year of the DFID funded project that focuses on a child to child approach to inclusive education in northern Uganda. There are also some exciting new opportunities and ways to get involved in supporting our work this year.

Thank you as always for your support.  Every donation we receive move us a little closer towards our goal-  a world where all disabled children are able to participate fully in life - and we couldn't do it without you.

Thanks and enjoy the news!

USDC - Update on the innovative Inclusive Education Project

AbleChildAfrica Programme Officer, Katy Crowe, reports on her recent visit to rural Uganda, where she spent a week visiting schools involved in DFID funded Inclusive Education project.

7 hours into our journey and the sun was high in the sky, the road seemed to be getting bumpier and more pothole ridden the further we travelled north!  The dust was becoming busier as the heat and the wheels pounded the dirt road.  We were journeying towards our first destination, Nebbi town in Northern Uganda.  This was my second trip up to the districts where AbleChildAfrica and USDC are piloting a new inclusive education project, funded by DFID.  The project is unique in that it trains and empowers children to identify disabled children in their communities and encourage and support them to start coming to school.  Once they are enrolled, children work together to identify and overcome any barriers their friends may face.  It is estimated that 98% of disabled children in Africa do not attend school.  The teachers, parents and communities are also trained and supported to work with the children to help overcome these barriers and promote positive messages about inclusion.

Yana visits East Africa for the first time!

Highlight:  Cooked school lunches at Child Support Tanzania (I don't
remember them tasting that good when I was at school!)

 Lowpoint: Saying goodbye!

Since joining AbleChildAfrica in November last year, I have been busy reading lots of reports and documents about our partners and the great work they do. However, an important part of getting to understand disabling barriers is understanding the environment and culture that leads to those barriers, which is something no document could ever convey.  Having never travelled to Sub-Saharan Africa before, I knew I had a lot to learn and experience, so I was very excited about my pending trip to Tanzania and Kenya.  I was definitely not let down!  Warm welcomes and friendly smiles were abundant, as were traffic jams!

"Live Below the Line" Campaign

For the first time ever AbleChildAfrica is taking part in the UK's only experiential fundraising campaign, Live Below the Line, challenging people to live on £1 a day for 5 days. Our supporters use their experience to create conversations, raise money and awareness of communities living in extreme poverty. AbleChildAfrica was compelled to take part in the campaign due to lack of awareness of the chronic poverty cycle that many disabled people globally find themselves trapped within. Did you know that more than 80% of disabled people in the developing world live below the poverty line?

From 28th April - 2nd May 2014, thousands of people across the UK, United States and Canada will be taking part in the challenge.  If you don't want to run a marathon, grow a moustache or jump out a plane but still want to challenge yourself and raise money for a great cause then read on here to find out more about the challenge.

Sign up for free now! Just click here.

We want as many of our supporters as possible to join us on this epic campaign to raise vital funds to support our work in 2014!
