Spotlight on a Partner- ANDY Kenya

Our partner Action Network for Disabled Youth (ANDY) in Nairobi are in the final year of a Comic Relief funded programme that offers young disabled Kenyan's sporting opportunities, whilst at the same time providing life changing internships or business loans.

Take Zachary*, from Kibera for example. He lost the use of his legs through childhood polio and felt unconfident and marginalised from his peers during secondary school, as he was often left out when they played games and sports. As a young adult he thought the chance to get involved with sport had passed, so he was delighted to get involved in the Sport for Health project. He took up table tennis and soon began enjoying increased mobility and greater physical fitness. This new found confidence encouraged Zachary to set up his own piggery and with business planning support and a start-up grant from ANDY he was able to buy a sow and a boar and now has 6 piglets. Although Zachary cannot read or write, ANDY have mentored and supported him to find innovative ways for keeping his books and importantly, accounting for his profit. Zachary even remarked that just getting to and from the sports is changing his life.

To find out more about Zachary and how his life has been changed through our work with ANDY, please visit our website.

Uganda: 1 Minibus, 10 days, 1200 KM

AbleChildAfrica's Executive Director, Jane Anthony, has just returned from two weeks travelling to remote villages in Northern Uganda with Programme Officer Katy Bodkin.  Here Jane tells us what she has been up to and why AbleChildAfrica's work with our partner USDC is so vital.

''This month I travelled to Uganda to visit USDC and was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to get out into the field and see the impact of our work on the ground.

My trip to the West Nile and Northern Regions in numbers: 10 days, 1200 km travelled, 6 Districts, 2 Nile river crossings, 16 schools, 4 hospitals, 1 home visit, 0 animal sightings, 28 visitor books signed, 6 parent support group meetings, countless chapattis eaten and 2 very proud AbleChildAfrica employees!

Introducing the latest edition to our team

Sonia Hunter - Public Fundraising Intern

Hi, my name is Sonia Hunter and I'm the new public fundraising intern for AbleChildAfrica!

I'm a student at SOAS  and I'll be entering my final year in September. I'll be working with AbleChildAfrica until the end of September and I'm really excited to be joining the team!

During my Internship I will be working to develop new Public Fundraising avenues and hopefully helping to raise lots of money to support AbleChildAfrica's work!  I am really excited to be able to contribute to a charity with such an important mission and focus.  Hopefully the next few months will see us raise lots of funds that will go to support disabled children in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania achieve their potential!''

The London Nightrider 2013

A huge thank you to our fantastic team of cyclists who took part in this years' London Nightrider event - 100km cycle through the streets of the capital at night!

A special Thank You goes to Akhlaq Choudhury who cycled the event from midnight on 8th June and finished in a fantastic time of 6 hours and 25 minutes.  On top of his cycling accomplishment he also managed to raise a staggering £845 to support AbleChildAfrica's work!!

Small Charity Week 2013

Whilst Jane and Katy were busy in Uganda, the rest of the team was kept busy with a lot happening in the UK office.  Small Charity Week, organised by the Foundation for Social Improvement, celebrates and raises awareness of the Small Charity Sector in the UK and the invaluable work that is carried out by charities to help change the lives of people around the world.

This year AbleChildAfrica took part in a number of events, from fundraising competitions to media matching.  On Policy day, AbleChildAfrica were invited to the Cabinet Office for the launch of the Small Charity Index, a new researching and reporting initiative for the sector with Nick Hurd, the Minister for Civil Society and then to the Houses of Parliament for the launch of the Federation of Small Charities Council, on which AbleChildAfrica have been asked to sit as a representative.  During Volunteering Day, we met with Media and PR professionals at a speed matching event organised by the Media Trust.

We were happy to have the opportunity to meet other small charities, especially those who are working on child rights issues in Africa and share our success stories with other organisations.

Are you tough enough to join our Tough Mudder team?

The staff at AbleChildAfrica have been so inspired by everyone's fundraising efforts this year that we have decided to take part in the UK's most ferocious challenge - Tough Mudder!  12 miles of SAS designed military assault course!

The entire Staff team and a few brave trustees will be taking part on Saturday 21st September, 2013 in Wales.

We are aiming to get a team of 20 Mudders together so if you want to join our team then get in touch with Amber: amber@ablechildafrica.org.uk

Or if you just aren't tough enough - go ahead and donate to the team here.

We are trying to raise a whopping £10k so dig deep and help us on our way!

LONDON TRIATHLON

We have one team place left for the Triathalon!

This event is a favourite every year and we continue to get great feedback from those who join up to create a relay team! This year's event is earlier than normal- the 27th/28th July so don't delay!!
