A Momentous Occasion

In our last newsletter we were getting close to the exciting prospect of being Torchbearers for the London Paralympic Games.
Well since then, on Wednesday 29th August, Team AbleChildAfrica carried the Paralympic Torch for 750 metres outside the entrance of London Zoo and through Regents Park.
It was a truly momentous way to recognise the great achievements of our partners, and in particular Action Network for Disabled Youth (ANDY).
Our team of Torchbearers included our Executive Director Jane Anthony, our Trustee Shikuku Obosi, the Executive Director of ANDY, Fred Ouko, ANDY's wheelchair basketball team coach Alfred Simiyu and Team GB Paralympian and AbleChildAfrica Patron, Anne Wafula Strike.

Throughout the day we were lucky enough to receive a number of media spotlights, including this snapshot by the Lambeth Weekender of Alfred Simiyu pulling his best Usain Bolt pose.
Fredrick Ouko also wrote a piece for the Guardian on his experience as a Paralympic Torchbearer and you can read it here.
We definitely recommend that you do!

Continuing Our Sporting Legacy

Tremendous sporting achievements don't just have to belong to Paralympians and world renown athletes, you can also take part in a number of events which can continue AbleChildAfrica's sporting legacy.
Our largest sporting event of the year is the London Marathon. The ballot for 2013 has now been drawn and if you were unlucky and didn't manage to get a place you can still run for us as a Golden Bond runner. If you would like to register, or simply would like to know more about what being a Golden Bond runner entails, then please email us at info@ablechildafrica.org.uk or call Nick on 020 7793 4144.
Places are bound to fill up quickly so get in touch as soon as you can!

However, if running isn't your cup of tea and your sporting highlight of the year has been focused on cycling, we have a challenge for you as well because we are now starting to gauge interest for next year's Nightrider event.
A 100km moonlit cycle through London, last year's Nightrider was a great success and this year will be even bigger. If you're interested then simply contact us again on the details above.
Nonetheless, if you would like to support our work but don't fancy taking on a sporting challenge you can always become a Friend of AbleChildAfrica by making a regular donation to our work. For information on becoming a Friend please click here

Upcoming Autumn News

Following the excitement of the summer, Autumn is looking to be an equally productive time for AbleChildAfrica.
Firstly, this week sees us host our first Partners Meeting since 2008, just outside of Nairobi in Kenya. Representatives from all five of our partners along with senior members of our team are meeting to discuss their current work and how we can all support each other as a network of organisations all striving to achieve the full potential for children and young people with disabilities in Africa.
November will also see AbleChildAfrica host our second Donor Dinner at the Buckingham Gate Hotel. This will be a great opportunity to spread the word about our work to new audiences and is shaping up to be a fun evening at the same time.
Full updates on both of these and more will follow over the next few months, but as always stay up to date with us by visiting our website at www.ablechildafrica.org and following us on Twitter @ablechildafrica.
