February 2013

Dear ,

We kicked off this month by holding our annual Leading Edge graduation and Business Plan Awards ceremony.  In 2012, the SBDC had over 300 participants in our Leading Edge Business Plan Course with over 200 graduates.  Each year, we honor these graduates through an awards ceremony at the Governor's Mansion.  In addition, each graduate is eligible to submit their business plan for the yearly competition.  Colorado Lending Source sponsored cash prizes this year for the top three winners!

It was great celebration where we had the chance to congratulate not only the graduates but thank our consultants, volunteers, and partners as well!

This year's winners:

  • Honorable Mention: King's Court Leisure Sports
  • Honorable Mention: 3rdSpace Coffee and Wine
  • Best in Agricultural Category: The Wiley Carrot Farm
  • 3rd Place: Goldspot Brewing Company
  • 2nd Place:: Halcyon Brewing Company
  • 1st Place: Flight Deck Grill
  • Consultant of the Year: Dale Clack
  • Volunteer of the Year: Chuck Bowles
  • Sponsor of the Year: Region 9 Economic Development District of Southwest Colorado
  • Legislator of the Year: Representative Max Tyler

Congratulations to this year's winners, and thank you again to our partners, consultants, and volunteers, who make this all possible.

Sincerely,

Kelly Manning

Boulder SBDC Success Story: ERC Insulation

As a majority woman-owned and operated business, based in Boulder, ERC Insulation was launched in answer to an unmet need in the marketplace.  And just three years from launching, ERC already has 18 employees and is still growing rapidly.

The story surrounding the formation of ERC Insulation began in 2006, when Elton and Christine Randall formed Elton Construction and Design.  Elton had difficulty finding a spray foam contractor for his jobs, so he sought a solution to this problem. Elton purchased a trailer with a spray foam reactor, which he could use to do his own spray foam jobs.  "Elton used it a few times, and then, this massive piece of equipment sat in our driveway. We started getting more calls for spray foam subcontracting work and what I saw sitting in my driveway was an opportunity", recalls Christine.  Thus, ERC Insulation was born in 2010, and Christine became CEO.  Together, ERC and Elton Construction and Design, offer residents and small commercial businesses a one-stop-shop for energy evaluation and energy solutions implementation.

Early in the company formation process, Christine attended the Leading Edge Entrepreneurship Series produced by the Boulder SBDC with sponsorship from the Colorado Green Building Guild. Christine was able to build a network of "like-minded" business people through the series, which became invaluable to her and the business. "The class facilitated our connection to a great group, and together we helped each other build our businesses".

Since that series, Christine has continued to attend Boulder SBDC workshops and events such as the annual Contract Opportunities Fair, and she currently participates in the Colorado Emerging Ventures program. Christine takes advantage of the no cost, one-on-one consulting program where she has found Sharon King, Boulder SBDC Director, to be "supportive, knowledgeable, and inspirational."  Christine shares that "some people offer consulting from a place of never having done, and Sharon comes from a place of personal experience and knows how to help."

From its Boulder base, ERC Insulation serves Boulder, Denver, Jefferson, Eagle, Garfield and Pitkin Counties - and continues to grow.  In addition to great timing, mentors and partners like the Boulder SBDC, Christine attributes their success to a strong focus on quality products, installations and personal customer care.  Christine cares deeply about her community, is a mother, business leader and environmental advocate.  She is already thinking about their next company venture.

SBA Launches Affordable Care Act Web Page

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) today launched a new web page and blog dedicated to educating small business owners about the Affordable Care Act. The new tools will serve as a gateway for small business owners connecting them with information provided by SBA's federal partners responsible for implementing the law, including the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

SBA's new web page, www.sba.gov/healthcare, breaks down the key provisions of the Act based on business size in the following categories: self-employed, fewer than 25 employees, fewer than 50 employees and more than 50 employees.

The web page also provides links to other useful information for small businesses, including a glossary of key health care reform terms, an interactive timeline with dates for when certain reforms will be implemented, a state-by-state breakdown of health care options, and how to learn more about specific tax provisions and regulations. Additional resources will be added as they become available.

Dry Cleaning Alternatives Summit and Trade Fair

Due to increasing concerns over dry cleaning solvent releases to the environment, and related impacts on air, water and soil, the Small Business Assistance Program at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and partners will host the Dry Cleaning Alternatives Summit and Trade Fair in Denver on March 9.

The Summit is an all-day event that will feature dry cleaning presentations and panel discussions from industry owners and operators of alternative dry cleaning facilities and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

The event also features an Exhibitor Trade Fair offering a multitude of resources in dry cleaning, laundry and wet cleaning equipment and supplies.

Small Business Tip:  How to Increase Foot Traffic to Your Store

Late last year, I hosted a web chat with the SBA offering holiday marketing tips and ideas to small business owners. And while many business owners submitted questions relating specifically to the holidays, a large percentage of questions centered on that age-old question: "How do I get more foot traffic to my store?"

Here are seven tried and tested steps you might want to consider:

  1. Start from the outside and look in
  2. Host a community event with a newsworthy tie-in
  3. Host a seminar or workshop
  4. Use location-based services to attract passersby
  5. Engage old customers in new ways
  6. Put on your small business customer service hat
  7. Stay in touch

Find more information about each tip here.

This week's tip brought to you by Caron Beesley and the SBA.

The annual Distillers Conference and Vendor Expo will be hosted in Denver this year, from April 1st - 4th.  The expo offers program seminars, panels, and workshops for all types of distillers; including those who are new to the industry and interested or considering starting a distillery, the new craft distiller looking to gain knowledge on production techniques and brand building, and the seasoned distillers who are seeking help in taking their brand to the next level.

We have been notified that small business owners are receiving a call from the number 889-777-1117, which is a company claiming to be with the State of Colorado Small Business Development.

This group is asking companies if they are moving, are persistent and rude. We have learned that this group is selling small business information to realtors, office supply companies etc.

Please be aware that if you receive any calls similar to the description above, they are not connected to the State of Colorado SBDC Network.

Thank you and please forward this message to help keep other small businesses up to date and on alert!
