December 2012
Dear (Contact First Name),
Hoping everyone is having a wonderful holiday season.
We have had a busy and fruitful 2012. We are happy to report that for the year 2012, the Colorado SBDC has provided free consulting to over 5,800 aspiring and existing business owners. In addition, the network has conducted over 850 training classes to more than 11,000 attendees. Many businesses owners have had a successful 2012 and we look forward to helping continue these successes as well as fostering many more in the New Year!

Southwest Colorado SBDC Success Story: Southern Ute Cultural Museum
| | Lynn Brittner, Executive Director, started planning the Southern Ute Cultural Center and Museum more than 10 years ago. The Center's opening this past May was her reward for years of dedication to her vision. Brittner's relationship with Joe Keck and the Southwest Colorado SBDC started way back at the beginning. She needed help and only had three people on her staff. A grant from the Administration for Native Americans provided funds for her to take Board members to visit other successful and non-successful museums around the country with an emphasis on tribal museums. They had a lot to learn about creating a world class structure inside and out in Ignacio. Keck had students from a business plan at Fort Lewis Community College help with the research she would need to write the business plan. "He has also been a consistent support and ongoing resource. He has introduced me to people who could help me with various aspects of the project and found us grant money to update the strategic plan. He is such a great guy," she gushes about Keck. Bittner was surprised at how many details have to be considered in creating a museum and exhibits. "We had to consider the exterior design, the interior design, signage, height of the educational plaques, size of the displays, as well as their user friendliness and degree of engagement." |

| Ice House Entrepreneurship Program | |
Colorado Lending Source, the state's not-for-profit small business financing expert, has launched the Ice House Entrepreneurship Program in partnership with the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.
The program is designed to provide adult students with the framework for understanding and implementing an entrepreneurial mindset. The Ice House Entrepreneurship Program, created by the Entrepreneurial Learning Initiative (ELI) and Pulitzer Prize nominee Clifton Taulbert is a two part learning experience:
- The Book: Based on the personal experience of author Clifton Taulbert, "Who Owns the Icehouse?" is a powerful and compelling story that draws on the entrepreneurial influence of eight essential life-lessons Taulbert gained from his Uncle Cleve, an unlikely entrepreneur in the segregated south.
- The Course: Based on the eight life-lessons described in the book, the interactive program combines narrated chalkboard presentations with video interviews and case studies featuring modern-day examples of those who, like Taulbert's Uncle Cleve, have triumphed over hardship and adversity by embracing an entrepreneurial mindset. In addition to the narrated chalkboard presentations, each lesson includes individual learning assessments, discussion topics and assignments that are designed to maximize comprehension while encouraging real-world application of the core concepts.

SBA Unveils New Learning Portal for Small Businesses & Entrepreneurs
| | |
Oftentimes, small business owners will share stories about how SBA's resources have been vital or how they are in need of finding the right help. This is one of the reasons why SBA continually strives to ensure that small business entrepreneurs have access to the resources they need for their business, including information on start-up how-to's, marketing, financing, contracting and more.
The SBA has learned valuable feedback from entrepreneurs who rely on their website to educate themselves about small business ownership and listened to what they said. They acknowledged that the user experience to access online resources needed to be easy, efficient and engaging. The SBA is pleased to announce that they have launched a new online learning center.
The learning center is a redesigned, online learning portal for small business entrepreneurs. It has a streamlined, searchable catalog of small business educational resources including self-paced courses, videos and web sessions. The resources may be sorted by topic, making it easier to quickly locate helpful information.
The learning center's features include:
- Information available everywhere at any time for small business entrepreneurs
- Improved navigation that gives users one-click access to small business courses, videos or web chat sessions
- A quick snapshot of each form of media, including a brief description and system requirements
- Free online courses on topics such as How to Write a Business Plan, Essential Guide to Starting Your Own Business for Young Entrepreneurs, Government Contracting 101, Green Business Opportunities and Encore Entrepreneurs: An Introduction to Starting Your Own Business
- Recommended courses, videos or web sessions based on selections that the user makes while navigating
