La Junta SBDC Success Story: Reid Aviation & Aerial Spraying, LLC
| | |
Born and rained on a farm and ranch in northeastern Colorado, Josh Reid operated all sorts of farm equipment - equipment that functioned by the use of steering wheels, levers and pedals. Now living in Springfield, Colorado, in the far southeastern part of the state, Reid still operates equipment that functions the same way. The levers and pedals are now attached to his own airplane, and soon to come, another plane and helicopter.
Reid started Reid Aviation & Ariel Spraying,
LLC in early 2012. His new business allows him to integrate the farm and ranch life he still loves with his passion for flying. Reid is certified by the Colorado Department of Agriculture to apply chemical sprays to farm fields for weeds and pest eradication as well as industrial rights of way and for the general public health.
With the help of the La Junta SBDC, Reid wrote a three-phase business plan to present to potential investors. The Southeast Colorado Enterprise Development (SECED) in Lamar approved initial funding for phase one of his plan. He used the funds to purchase a small two-person plane as the first in his new business. As Reid's business grows and he implements the other two phases of his plan, he will purchase a larger plane and a helicopter for chemical spraying, plus the hanger and assets of a current aerial spraying business in his community.
Reid plans to market his aerial spraying business to farmers from Arizona to Iowa and south Texas to the Canadian border. He commented, "Farmers reply on a quality and reliable spraying service for the very best crops. My success will be measured by customer creation and retention. I owe a lot to my family and friends, the SBDC and the SECED in helping make this dream no longer a dream, but a reality."

Colorado's Newest Crop is Agritourism
| |
The Colorado Tourism Office (CTO) and Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA) have teamed up to boost opportunities for travelers and capitalize on the boom in agritourism. There is tremendous growth opportunity for agritourism. The 2007 Census of Agriculture reported that of the 37,054 farms in Colorado, only 679 - fewer than 2% - reported agritourism income.
Colorado is the first in the nation to pair heritage tourism and agritourism. A 2007 Colorado State University study reported that 75% of travelers participated in at least one agricultural, food or heritage activity on their trip.
Seven regional strategic planning sessions are scheduled around the state to educate potential providers about the benefits of getting in the game and glean valuable feedback from those currently involved in agritourism. Click here for more information and meeting dates.

Small Business Tip: Position Your Start-Up for the Long Term
| | |
When starting a new business, there's a strong temptation to make decisions for the short term. But you need to anticipate the long-term challenges. There are three things it's critical to get right:
- Co-founders: The natural inclination is to co-found with family or friends. But these relationships can be fraught. Plus you're more likely to have similar perspectives. Look for partners who bring complementary skills and assets.
- Roles: Most founders want a C-level title. After all, they were there from the start. But choose roles that reflect the actual work each founder will do, not the fancy title he wants to show off.
- Rewards: One of the biggest questions for start-ups is how to split equity ownership. A handshake on 50/50 will not do, because almost all new companies will have a major change in strategy or founder involvement. Negotiate an arrangement that can change when circumstances do.
This small business tip was brought to you by Harvard Business Review, adapted from "Three Pitfalls Startup Founders Must Avoid" by Noam Wasserman.

Hickenlooper Extends Relief for Drought-Stricken Ranchers and Livestock Owners
| |
Gov. John Hickenlooper announced on October 23 that he extended an Executive Order that authorizes transports of large baled hay or baled livestock feed which may exceed lawful maximum height.
The governor signed the original Executive Order on September 21. Since then, CDOT has issued 13 permits to nine different applicants. The Executive Order suspended rules that prevent the State from issuing single-trip, extra-legal permits for divisible loads of "baled hay" or "baled livestock feed" of heights ranging from 14 feet, 6 inches to 15 feet.
"Large areas of Colorado have experienced devastating damage from drought. This has severely impacted the ability of Colorado livestock producers to acquire the requisite amount of feed for their animals," the Executive Order said. "As winter approaches, such restrictions put Colorado livestock in severe danger and producers require immediate assistance to meet their feed requirements."
The governor announced the Executive Order last month during the inaugural Pedal the Plains event on the Eastern Plains. The extension is good for 30 days.
