O Come, O Come, Emmanuel
The Season after Pentecost, 2012
Thursday, November 29

We're watching and waiting for the coming King...

Greetings!

Advent, which means "coming," is the Christian observance signaling that Christmas is on the way. But here's something you may not know: The Advent Season focuses as much on Christ's second coming as it does His first-- and there are many common themes with both: anticipation, preparation, and expectation.

Beginning with the Sunday nearest November 30, Advent includes the four Sundays before Christmas. By the way, you'll notice that one of the colors used in worship this time of year is purple, meant to be a reminder of the royalty of Christ and the dignity of the season. The color also harkens to an early practice when, like Lent, Advent was considered a time of penitence.

This weekend, on the first Sunday in Advent, we will light the candle of hope-- hope as we eagerly await Christ's coming!

For Christians, there need not be any fear about the future. Although it holds surprises, we know Who holds the future! So, how do we wait in the meantime? As Jesus said, recorded in the Luke passage for this Sunday: "Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man."

Waiting and watching with you,

Advent Lessons 2012PS: Don't forget about our wonderful service of Advent Scripture Lessons and Carols this coming Sunday night at 6 PM (at the chapel). It's going to be beautiful!
