Is Summer Reading as Good as a Summer Program? Research Says Yes!

Think Stretch

Teachers and parents alike will find that this study validates what they have known all along: Children lose skills during the summer months! The National Summer Learning Association recently published a study that found when a child reads 20 minutes per day, 5 days a week, his or her reading achievement will reinforce reading proficiency as well as or better than summer school or remedial programs.

This reminds us of the old adage: What are the top ten ways to become a better reader?

Read, READ, read, Read, read, Read, READ, read, Read, read!

What Was That Number Again?

Numbers

Quick! What's 7x8? How about 6x9?

Addition and multiplication facts are often lost during the summer months. Students who do not practice math over the summer can lose up to two months in computational ability. Math facts require frequent practice. When you visit ThinkStretch click on the green box for ideas to help keep math facts fresh for the next year. You will find graded "workbooks" which can maintain this past year's achievements or advance for next year.
