Book Fair creates excitement for reading

There was such a feeling of excitement and a celebration of reading at this week's DCD book fair. Many thanks to all of the volunteers who helped us with the set-up and during the sale. We need to publicly call out Alida Coo-Kendall as the coordinator. She was the liaison with the vendor, organized the pre-orders for the required summer reading, recruited volunteers, and devoted this week to the success of the event. Many thanks to all! -Marge & Kathy

Time to return your library books
It's that time of year when we ask that all DCD library books be returned. Please check at home and send the books back with your children.
Nothing but Nets raises funds to stop malaria
The rescheduled Nothing but Nets shoot-a-thon on Friday, May 13, was successful in raising $870, the highest total raised to date, to send mosquito netting to Africa to help stop the transmission of malaria. Over the past nine years, the shoot-a-thon has raised $6,000. This year 27 lower schoolers participated in the event, assisted by 18 middle schoolers. Prizes were awarded for the highest percentage of free throws and hockey shots made by both boys and girls in grades 3-5. Everyone received a small prize for participating. Thanks to Brenda Leith for her help organizing this event, to the lower school parents for their generous donations, and to the students who participated!

Birthday wishes granted
Seventh graders Eleni Kolovos and Lexi Ravech put together a team to raise money and walk for Birthday Wishes' annual Cake Walk on Sunday, May 15. Birthday Wishes is an organization that provides birthday parties (including gifts) to children who are experiencing homelessness. The DCD Middle School team raised over $1,000 this year. The organization raised over $172,000.

Picture book biographies aren't just for our younger students anymore. Many of these short, illustrated biographies are for older children too. A couple of our recent acquisitions will also be of interest to adults, and they both demonstrate the unique perspective that artists have.

Josef Albers' work with color was an important milestone for artists, teachers, and anyone who is interested in the use of color. An Eye for Color: The Story of Josef Albers by Natasha Wing, illustrated by Julia Breckenreid (Henry Holt) clearly describes Albers' curiosity about how colors work with each other, and how differently they react with each other.

In order to use color effectively it is necessary to recognize that color deceives continually.      -Josef Albers
