Calling all runners and poets to the James Joyce Ramble this Sunday!
It's not too late to participate with DCD in the James Joyce Ramble this Sunday, April 24. We are still looking for water-stop volunteers and runners! Let us know if you're interested by signing up through Signup Genius to get your team t-shirt while supplies last. (Please note, if you are planning to run with the DCD team, you need to also register with the James Joyce Ramble www.ramble.org ). Spectators are also welcome!
Students Celebrate Earth Day
DCD students celebrated Earth Day this year by writing out their Earth Day pledges on handmade paper leaves, which were then attached to paper trees displayed around the school on Earth Day.

Each student pledged to protect the earth by doing one small thing to help.

Read On! The Library Blog
And the winner is...
Salem State University announced the winner of the 2016 Massachusetts Children's Book Award (MACBA) earlier this month. The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate (Harper Collins) received the most votes. DCD's fourth and fifth graders had voted for this as one of their top choices, although they awarded it an honorable mention. The story, published in 2012, is told from the perspective of Ivan, a gorilla in captivity. When a baby elephant is added as an attraction at the same shopping mall, a rare and poignant friendship develops between the two animals. This book has already received many awards given by adults. Many children are touched by the story, even though there are many sad aspects to it.

Two of the MACBA honor books were chosen by our students in a tie as their number one choices. Mr. Lemoncello's Library by Chris Grabenstein (Random House) and The Wishing Spell: The Land of Stories, #1 by Chris Colfer (Little Brown) were immensely popular. The sequels to both books are in high demand in our library.

Summer Scrapbook Workshop at DCD
Second grade teacher Mrs. Holden is offering a summer scrapbooking workshop at DCD. Scrapbooks are a great way to save and share memories in a creative way. Kids will learn how easy it is to make adorable and interactive scrapbook pages that will keep their memories safe and organized for a lifetime. Throughout the workshop, children explore different scrapbooking techniques: cropping, matting, journaling, and layouts. Also, children become comfortable with different tools to create interesting pages for their personal album, including stamps, punchers, cutters, Sizzix, and Cricut machine. If your child loves paper crafts and photos and showing them off, this summer activity is for them! Contact Christine Holden for information on the 2016 Scrapbook Workshop to be held June 14-17 and June 20-24 at cholden@dcds.net.
