Important schedule details for next week
  • On Monday, March 7, sixth and seventh graders may be picked up at 3:00 p.m. (optional dismissal)
  • On Friday, March 11, dismissal for all students will be at the conclusion of the Lower School Visual and Performing Arts program or approximately 11:30 a.m. 
  • There is no Extended Day on Friday, March 11.

Middle school students receive recognition from SISAL
There was exciting news this week for DCD middle school students who received nine awards at the annual Small Independent School Art League (SISAL) show hosted by the Bancroft School.

A reception and award ceremony will take place this Sunday, March 6, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Read more...

Matthew Volfson qualifies for Massachusetts National Geographic State Bee
After winning DCD's geography bee for the second year in a row, fifth grader Matthew Volfson has qualified for the 2016 Massachusetts National Geographic State Bee, which will be held on Friday, April 1, 2016, at Elms College.

This is the second level of the National Geographic Bee competition. School Bees were held in schools with fourth- through eighth-grade students throughout the state to determine each school champion. School champions then took an online qualifying test. The National Geographic Society has invited up to 100 of the top-scoring students in each of the 50 states, District of Columbia, Department of Defense Dependents Schools and U.S. territories to compete in the state Bees.

Alumni Speaker Kate Woodworth '65 talks about the importance of mentors
Kate Woodworth '65 talks to students after her presentation.

As part of DCD's Alumni Speaker Series, students were treated to a visit from Kate Woodworth, writer and member of the DCD class of 1965. At morning assembly on Thursday, March 3, Kate spoke about the importance and value of mentors and how a special mentor here at DCD inspired her to become a writer. "Mentors can help you know who you are and who you want to be," she told the students as she recalled the moment she decided to become a writer.

Massachusetts Book Awards are celebrated in the Library
Fourth and fifth graders gathered in the library on Thursday, March 3, for a special reception to celebrate the Massachusetts Book Awards. 

Thirty-five fourth and fifth graders participated in the Massachusetts Children's Book Award reading program this year, and eleven students read all of the twenty-five books nominated.

DCD wins the February Challenge!


With a total of 81 new gifts made to the Annual Fund during the month of February, DCD came back from 4th place to win the 2016 February Challenge, a friendly annual competition among peer schools to increase giving among young alumni. What an incredible rally! Congratulations to the Classes of 1995-2015. DCD students are really excited about this win too!

Sign up now for Extended Day spring programs
This spring, EDP is offering three after-school programs in Fused Glass with Denault Studios, Robots with Mr. Nash, and Chess with Chess Wizards. Students may join these programs whether or not they are enrolled in EDP. All three programs will run from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. and originate at Extended Day. Calling all runners and poets!
Save the date for the James Joyce Ramble on Sunday, April 24,  and get involved in this great community event by representing DCD, a sponsor of this year's race. There are three ways you can take part in this year's event: 1) Join the DCD running team and run or walk in the race; 2) join the hydration team and hand out water along the race route to thirsty runners; and 3) join the tent crew at the Endicott Estate and help spread the word about DCD. The trailer for collecting gently used books, toys, and sporting goods to sell at the Fair is located in the parking lot next to Herrick and Huntington House. Please keep in mind as you're doing spring cleaning to donate items to Toys and Books at the DCD Fair. Click here for a list of acceptable items.

What a celebration of books and reading we had this week at school! Thirty-five fourth and fifth graders participated in the Massachusetts Children's Book Award reading program this year. Eleven students read all of the twenty-five books that were nominated.

Considering overnight camp for your child or teen this summer? Interested in exploring a wide variety of day options? Join us at Dedham's Avery School on Saturday, March 5, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to chat with representatives from more than 50 summer programs. Traditional day and overnight camps, unique programs focusing on academic enrichment, STEM, the arts, sports - we have something for everyone. Maple Magic

The Natick Community Organic Farm will host a special event, Maple Magic, on Saturday, March 5, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., featuring a pancake breakfast and maple sugaring tours and demonstrations. Click here for a flyer. 
International music featured in local concert
Alan Johnson, brass instructor in DCD's Private Music Program, will perform at the Marlborough Public Library, Bigelow Auditorium, 35 West Main Street, at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9. He will join fellow members of the musical group the Solstice Sackbuts in performing an international program of folk and pop music featuring sambas, tangos, tarantellas, polkas, horahs, waltzes, jigs, and calypsos as well as rock, jazz, and other popular music from around the world.
