Sol y Canto Brings a Latin Beat to DCD
Puerto Rican/Argentine singer and bongo player Rosi Amador and New Mexican guitarist and composer Brian Amador treated us to a musical fiesta at morning assembly on January 11.
The musicians are members of the pan-Latin ensemble Sol y Canto, a nationally-touring musical group. Their high-energy sound, featuring the rhythms, songs, and instrumentation of Latin America, helped the audience shake away the winter blues and had them singing and clapping to the music.

Jack's Kitchen
Nutritionists tell us to fill our plates with foods having lots of different colors. You can't go wrong at our salad bar, where children can find a colorful array of many fruits and vegetables, including tomatoes, cucumbers, and red and green peppers. DCD also offers a number of different high-protein options at the salad bar, including black beans, chickpeas, tuna, grilled chicken, boiled eggs, egg salad, cheese, and sun butter. Award Season
On one Monday morning every January, everyone who is involved with children's books anxiously awaits the announcement of the awards that are given by the American Library Association. Librarians, teachers, students, authors, illustrators, booksellers, and publishers all wonder whether their favorites will be mentioned for the Caldecott and Newbery Awards or whether a little recognized book will be honored. Will we agree with the choices? Will there be controversy? Who will get the awards?

This year, the committees had a number of books from which to choose in many categories. As someone who promotes books to young people, I felt that there were many outstanding books published in 2015. The award that is nearest and dearest to me is the Randolph Caldecott Medal, which is given "to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children."

The 2016 Caldecott winner is Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World's Most Famous Bear, illustrated by Sophie Blackall and written by Lindsay Mattick (Little, Brown). I have especially shared this book with our third graders as an introduction to my Winnie-the-Pooh unit. This true story chronicles the life of a bear cub that became the inspiration for A.A. Milne's classic, Winnie-the-Pooh. ...

The concert will include varied music for brass, winds, keyboard, and harp spanning many musical periods. For more information, please contact Christine Nicholas or click here for the poster.
Faculty Request
I am looking for a very small key (about 1" long) for a student to embed in a mosaic. If you have a tiny key that is no longer of any use, please put it in my mailbox at school. Thank you. Lisa Houck
