"Exploring DCD's Middle School"

The DCD Parent Association invites you to join fellow DCD parents for an open discussion "Exploring DCD's Middle School." The discussion will explore both the academic and social aspects of middle school, with the emphasis on the experience of students at DCD. Possible academic topics might include longer days, more homework, looking ahead to high school, and finding the right balance between school and other activities. Social topics may include peer interactions, conflict resolution, and the impact of social media on our teens. The meeting is open to all DCD parents, and you are encouraged to bring your questions. To learn more about Parent to Parent, visit our page on the DCD website: https://dedhamcountryday.myschoolapp.com/page/Parent-to-Parent-?siteId=758

Halloween Candy Drive
During the week of November 2-6, DCD students and their families collected Halloween candy to help Operation: American Soldier in a partnership with Chestnut Dental, located in Needham and Franklin, Massachusetts. Middle school volunteers sorted the collected candy by type (hard candy, sticky candy, chocolates) and then prepared these treats to be mailed to our soldiers overseas along with toothbrushes and toothpaste from Chestnut Dental. More than ten 10-lb bags of candy were collected and donated.
DCD Winter Coat Drive Spreads Warmth
As a community service project, a group of Middle School students organized a school-wide Winter Coat Drive, collecting winter clothing for children in need. On Friday, November 13, students representing all grades at DCD and their parents delivered  donations made by our school community to the Cradles to Crayons' Giving Factory in Boston and stayed for an afternoon of volunteering. They sorted clothes, cleaned and sorted shoes, and wrote cards for the children who are supported by C2C. It was a great day and a wonderful opportunity for the kids to give of their time to others.

Historical Fiction
Some books that I pick up as just an entertaining read pique my interest to further investigate the subject they present. That's what happened with Rebecca Behrens' contemporary story, When Audrey Met Alice (Sourcebooks, 2014).  The main character portrayed in the book is Audrey Rhodes, and she is the "First Daughter" in the White House. With her mother as President of the United States and her father a busy scientist, Audrey has no one to share her challenging experience as an only child who faces the spotlight. She attends Friends Academy in Washington, D.C., and it is difficult for Audrey to determine whether her fellow students are interested in being her friend only because of her mother's position. It is also a bit difficult for a middle school girl to even talk to a boy when her Secret Service agent is hovering nearby....
