Emergency Messaging System Being Tested Next Week We will be testing the school's emergency communications (snow day) system next Tuesday, November 3, at 9:00 a.m. You should receive a telephone message from Nick Thacher that we are testing the network. If you do not receive a message that morning on your phone, or if you wish to receive the message on a different phone, please contact either Barbara Laneau or George Silvestri to update the data on our emergency communications network. This is particularly important because we will no longer be notifying the local television stations on snow day closures; we are only notifying by telephone and through the website.

Nick, who used to ride to school when he was a student at DCD, spoke about the time he was a bike messenger after college and the work he's done since in both Chicago and Boston to make sure bicycling is a safe and viable transportation option. Dressed in a suit, he even bicycled from home to DCD for his talk.

Fifth Grade Visits the Whaling Museum Fifth graders enjoyed a trip to the New Bedford Whaling Museum, where they saw a half-size whaling ship, used mirrors to experience how a whale sees with eyes on the sides of its head, and gazed in awe at a Blue Whale skeleton that is still dripping oil from the bones after 20 years.
The trip was part of their study of whales this fall and gave them a sense of the size of these giant creatures. They also learned about the whaling industry that helped build the city of New Bedford.

Gently Used Blue Blazer and Boys' Shoe Exchange Boys are required to wear a blue blazer, dress shoes, and a tie for the Thanksgiving and Holiday assemblies. If your child needs a blue blazer or dress shoes, you may find just what you're looking for in the closet of the Emmons Lobby (next to Mr. Thacher's office). Blazers and shoes may be taken or exchanged for use by DCD students and may also be donated by placing them in this closet at any time throughout the school year. You do not need to donate one to take one, but it does help with inventory.

Fresh from the Garden The garden season is coming to an end, but we are still finding ways to add fresh produce to our lunch program. This week we used our school-grown herbs to make a new mozzarella dish for the salad bar. Basil, thyme, parsley and mint were added to olive oil with a sprinkle of Adobo seasoning to make a yummy new dish for the children to try and enjoy. Thank you to the Mims' orchard for supplying the delicious apples we have been eating and enjoying for weeks.

Aliens!
The United States was battling its way through the Great Depression. Adolph Hitler had risen to power in Germany, and his army was advancing throughout Europe. Many American families gathered around the radios in their homes for entertainment and news. Because of the world events, listeners became accustomed to their radio entertainment being interrupted by news reports. Orson Welles used this model of breaking into a regularly scheduled show with news. He decided to use some ideas from H.G. Wells 1898 book, War of the Worlds. In that story, alien vessels landed in London and terrorized that city and moved throughout the world.
