Nooks & Crannies
It's always a happy time for me when I discover a new author to share with students.
Jessica Lawson is my latest "find," and I've been recommending her latest book, Nooks & Crannies (Simon & Schuster).

In the beginning chapters of Nooks & Crannies, I thought that I knew the formula that Lawson was following for the plot. The setting is London in the early 1900s, and six children received an invitation from the Countess of Windermere to spend a weekend at her "magnificent and secluded home."

Hmm...that was sounding like Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or the more recent Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library by Chris Grabenstein.

Duane Claussen to Perform at BSO Onstage at Symphony
DCD music teacher Duane Claussen will perform in a community orchestra at Symphony Hall on Saturday, October 31, at 1:30 p.m. Onstage at Symphony, as the group is known, is for adult amateur musicians in Massachusetts who have a passion for musical performance but have pursued alternate career paths. The group's participants were selected from a pool of applicants on a lottery basis and range in age from 22 to 81. The concert is free and open to the public.

A Conversation on Girls and Stress
The first in a series of forums at Dana Hall School designed to examine topics of particular relevance to girls and girls education will focus on adolescent girls and stress.

Thursday, November 12, 7-8:30 p.m.
Dana Hall School campus, 45 Dana Road, Wellesley

While girls are aspiring to even more ambitious academic goals than ever, they also report higher levels of stress and a stronger reaction to stress than their male counterparts.
In a panel discussion moderated by Dana Hall Head of School Caroline Erisman, a group of educators, scientists, and clinicians will share recent research findings, as well as discuss and share practical strategies to help parents, teachers, and students devise methods to perform well in the classroom, while also mitigating stress.

Panelists:
Dr. Rob Evans, Executive Director of The Human Relations Service
Dr. Belle Liang, Associate Professor of Counseling, and Developmental and Educational Psychology in the Lynch School of Education at Boston College
Dr. Layli Maparyan, Executive Director, Wellesley Centers for Women
