Third graders hosted students from Community Prep School in Providence, Rhode Island, on Tuesday, June 2. The students have been pen pals since the fall. They toured the school together using iPads to document the "scavenger hunt" of assigned pictures and made a collage to commemorate the occasion.

Message from Annual Fund Co-Chairs Believe it or not, in just five days the 2014-15 school year will come to an end. And with that, we will say goodbye to the DCD community until September. In these last five days, we hope to reach 100% current parent participation in the Annual Fund and show DCD teachers how much we appreciate all that they do for our children. Thank you to all who have supported the Annual Fund so far. Parent participation is now at 86%.
If you haven't yet made your gift or pledge, please do so today! Click here to contribute online, or contact Ashley Linell (alinell@dcds.net, 781-329-0850, ext. 2562) in the Development Office. The deadline is June 30! Thank you so much for your help.

Castle Cake Fourth graders enjoyed making, and eating, a cake made to look like a Medieval castle. The annual activity with Librarian Marge Farquharson is part of the curriculum on the Middle Ages.

1. DCDwear that travels the furthest
2. The silliest photo taken in DCDwear
3. The most people clad in DCDwear

Two Novels
There have already been a number of quality books published in 2015 for our intermediate and young adult readers. Two of my latest favorites are Echo by Pam Munoz Ryan (Scholastic, 2015) and Stella by Starlight by Sharon Draper (Atheneum Books for Young Readers, 2015). These books are each challenging with their content and intriguing with their plots. Echo is a difficult book to describe because it shifts back and forth from fantasy to reality. In a mysterious and forbidden forest, a man meets three strange sisters who deliver a prophecy, a promise, and a harmonica. That harmonica is intertwined within three other stories. Readers will be drawn to the challenges that Friedrich in Germany, Mike in Pennsylvania, and Ivy in California face during different time periods. This is a long book with 592 pages, and readers will be so engrossed in the plot that they will be disappointed to have it end. Stella by Starlight is realistic fiction that challenges readers to face the realities of racism in the United States. The main character lives in Bumblebee, North Carolina, in the heart of the segregated south. In this Depression Era story, the Ku Klux Klan are making a reappearance and terrorizing many in the area. Summer Field Hockey Clinic Run by DCD Alumni A three-day field hockey clinic, run by Maddie Ayles '11 and Allee Ayles '12, will take place July 21-23 at the Westwood High School Turf from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day. The clinic is for children in Grades 3 through 12, and no skill level or experience is required. All of the coaches are DI, DII or DIII college-bound players, including: - Maddie Ayles: DCD class of 2011, Nobles class of 2015, Brown University class of 2019
- Allee Ayles: DCD class of 2012, Nobles class of 2016, Brown University class of 2020
- Waverly Jackson: DCD class of 2011, Westwood class of 2015, Northeastern University class of 2019
The goal of the clinic is to give girls a really fun experience that focuses on both skills and team building with a lot of individual attention to help players meet their personal goals. Goalie-specific training is available on a day-to-day basis if there is interest. Also, for the older players who may be preparing for tryouts and upcoming school seasons, our coaches, who are experienced varsity players, will focus specifically on that with them. For more information, visit their Web site, aylesfieldhockey.com or contact Maddie Ayles, (617) 756-7919 or aylesfieldhockey@gmail.com.
