Message from Annual Fund Co-Chairs
In our house, the countdown to the end of school is on. For us, that means the 2014-2015 Annual Fund countdown is on, too. Thank you to all who have supported the Annual Fund so far. Parent participation is now at 83% -- thanks to recent support from parents in Kindergarten, 4th grade, and 8th grade. This is fantastic, but we need all of your help to get to that magical 100% number. Please help us send a strong message of support to the DCD faculty and staff who make a difference in our children's lives every day. As proof, take a look at this amazing video from this very special team!

Grade Two Students Learn About Woodwinds
Recently, the grade two students have been learning about the families of the orchestra. This week's highlight was the woodwind family, and mystery musicians, Linda Poland & Allan Pearlmutter, surprised the students with an instrumental demonstration about the clarinet. Linda is a member DCD's private music program and hopes to encourage students to learn a woodwind instrument. Her husband, Allan, is a pianist, jazz drummer, and conductor. Students are encouraged to think about learning to play a wind instrument after a successful year of playing the recorder. Private music sign up sheets were also sent home yesterday.  The deadline to signup has been extended for all students interested in learning to play a wind instrument.
Alumni Authors Project
Melanie Guerra '86 has started a project to collect all written works published by members of the DCD community. The collection will become part of the DCD Library displayed at the school. If you are a published author, or you know a member of our community who may be interested in donating his or her work to DCD, please contact Danise Cavallaro.

Read On, the DCD Library Blog
Let the Reading Begin!
It was an exciting week for our rising fourth, fifth, and sixth grade readers because of the announcement of the 2015-2016 nominees for the Massachusetts Children's Book Award. This voluntary reading incentive program has become a popular event for many students. The organizers at Salem State College have responded to librarians' suggestions and requests to publish the nominees as soon as possible in May. Fortunately for us, the list was published last Friday afternoon. We were able to get many of the titles for our book fair this week. As the children7 plan their summer reading, we've encouraged them to use the MACBA list for suggested titles and authors.

Some of the books that have been nominated for the 2016 award are already favorites of mine. One of them, Counting by 7s by Holly Goldberg Sloan is a sophisticated novel for our readers....

The clinic is for children in Grades 3 through 12, and no skill level or experience is required. All of the coaches are DI, DII or DIII college-bound players, including:
  • Maddie Ayles: DCD class of 2011, Nobles class of 2015, Brown University class of 2019

Goalie-specific training is available on a day-to-day basis if there is interest. Also, for the older players who may be preparing for tryouts and upcoming school seasons, our coaches, who are experienced varsity players, will focus specifically on that with them.
