Chef in Training
Kathryn (aka Katie) Layden, was an assistant lunch server for the K-2 lunch on Tuesday, May 12, one of the experiences up for bidding at the School Daze event held in March. She chose a menu of French toast with syrup, cantaloupe, carrot and celery sticks and Red Sox ice cream bars. Mr. O'Donnell and Mrs. McPherson dressed her in a chef's hat, apron, and gloves and put her to work setting out the veggie sticks on the tables and serving from inside the kitchen. She received a great intro from Mr. Coakley and got to announce the menu.

Sixth Graders Dedicate Play Performances to Nick Thacher
Sixth Grade ended this year's drama season with a moving play about orphans living in Victorian London performed on Thursday and Friday, May 14 and 15, in the Lowell Center. The students decided to dedicate their performances to Head of School Nick Thacher in honor of all the help and support he has given them over the years. Morgan Kendall delivered the following dedication: "In honor of our play, we would like to dedicate our performance to the Head of School, Mr. Thacher, for all of his support of our plays over the years and for teaching us interesting words at the end of each performance. Thank you, Mr. Thacher, and we hope you enjoy our play." Click here to view scenes from the play.

Message from Annual Fund Co-Chairs
Thanks to everyone who has supported the Annual Fund so far. As of today, we have 79% parent participation. This is fantastic, but we need your help to get that number even higher! By joining together as a community behind the Annual Fund, we not only provide critical funding for our current programs, but we send a strong message of support to the DCD faculty and staff who make a difference in our children's lives every day.

If you haven't yet made your gift or pledge, please do so today! Click here to contribute online, or contact Ashley LInell (alinell@dcds.net, 781-329-0850, ext. 2562) in the Development Office. The deadline is June 30!  Thank you so much for your help.

Spring Reading

There are some very entertaining new novels for children and young adults that have been published this spring. I have a stack of books to read, and I want to recommend two this week.

https://dcdlibrary.edublogs.org/files/2015/05/fish-20km0os.jpg

Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt (Penguin, 2015) is a novel that many readers from ages 10+ might enjoy. I did! The narrator of this story is Ally, a sixth grader who is struggling to navigate school. She is contending with the typical social issues that occur during those middle school years. As an outsider, Ally is trying to fit in. Her difficulties are compounded by the fact that her father is in the military, and he is currently stationed overseas. Her family has moved around a lot because of her father's assignments, and school hasn't been easy for Ally or her older brother. Maybe it's because she was never in one school for very long, or maybe Ally was very good at faking her ability, but no teacher had picked up on Ally's academic deficits. The situation in her present school is similar to that in her previous one, she gets sent to the principal's office often for causing problems. Her new sixth grade teacher realizes that Ally can't read, and that she is dyslexic. Even though the main character is a girl, one of her best friends is an interesting boy, and this might help with the appeal to our male readers. Ally's teacher's words to her are some that all children who struggle need to hear,

Everybody is smart in different ways. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its life believing it is stupid.
