Medieval Feast

The young lords and ladies presented shields they had made in wood shop and performed a dance to music in addition to answering questions from parents and other visitors about life during the Middle Ages. Gerry Clifford and Kathy Suchma made a guest appearance as the king and queen.

Every Day Is Earth Day at DCD!

Did you know that DCD composts food waste and uses it in the community garden? Students also routinely recycle milk cartons, cans and bottles, and classroom paper.

On Wednesday, April 22, DCD celebrated Earth Day with a Food Waste Awareness event. The project was intended to highlight our community's continued efforts to support our environment and minimize food waste. Students in grades 3-8 and faculty were challenged to reduce the amount of food waste produced during their lunch periods. All liquid and food waste was weighed and the impressive results graphed for comparison. We managed to produce less than one ounce of trash per person on average, and that included liquid waste. That is smaller than a cube of cheese. Be sure to learn more about the results by viewing the Community Outreach Committee bulletin board outside the Lawrence Room.

Holocaust Survivor Speaks to Students
Ralph Samuel, a participant in the Kindertransport during WWII, spoke to Eighth Graders during a Facing History and Ourselves class on Wednesday, April 22. Mr. Samuel is a family friend of Fifth Grade teacher Joanna Bemis, having stayed with her grandparents in England during the war. He is pictured at right with Joanna and her daughter Julia, an Eighth Grader.

Pedro Martnez
pedro Matt Tavares shares an inspirational story in Growing Up Pedro (Candlewick Press, 2015). Pedro Martnez got his first real baseball glove when his older brother, Ramn, signed a contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers for five thousand dollars. The Martnez family lived in the village of Manoguayabo in the Dominican Republic, and Ramn was the baseball star of the family. Ramn told Pedro stories of his struggles in the United States because he couldn't speak much English. Pedro began to study English, and when he was eventually given a shot in the Dodgers' minor-league system, he could be interviewed without an interpreter.

Many players and fans implied that Pedro only made the team because Ramnwas a star pitcher. Pedro was determined to prove them wrong, and he became one of the best relievers in the league. When the Dodgers traded Pedro to the Montreal Expos, Ramn encouraged him to prove his talent. ...
