Charlie Volpe Is Winner of the Spelling Bee for the Second Time Seventh Grader Charlie Volpe (standing, above), the champion in 2013, is the 2015 champion, successfully besting Eighth Grader Julia Bemis (far right) by correctly spelling "accommodation." Other final-round words included "extraordinary," "cerise," and "unenforceable." Fourth Grader Eli Leder (far left) and Sixth Grader Jackson Abreu were the other finalists. Charlie was competing for the fourth time; Julia for the third time; and Eli and Jackson for the first time. The other contestants, champions of their own grades, were: Catherine Ross (Grade 4), Maeve Haggerty and Parker Collins (Grade 5), Amanda Shih (Grade 6), Hannah Curran (Grade 7), and Meera Singh (Grade 8). Congratulations to all!

Winter Sports Season Concludes Winter sports wrap up at DCD with two assemblies, the first on Monday, March 2, where awards will be given out for hockey, squash, and JV boys' basketball, and the second on the following Monday, March 9, for Varsity girls' and boys' basketball and JV girls' basketball.

Third Grade Mathathon Benefits St. Jude's This year's Third Grade class raised $7,367 for St. Jude's Hospital through their annual Mathathon, the highest amount ever raised by DCD Third Graders, and by only 22 students!

February Challenge UpdateThere are only two days left! The February Challenge ends tomorrow. If you know any alumni who graduated between 1994 and 2014 who are considering making a gift to DCD's Annual Fund, please encourage them to give before tomorrow night. School Daze at DCD... Auction Item Preview Pajama Party at DCD Sleepovers can be a nightmare for parents, but don't worry, two of our Middle School teachers will take over parenting duties for one night this spring while you sleep soundly at home. Mrs. Bababekov and Ms. Pereira will chaperone an overnight Pajama Party at DCD for all of either the girls or the boys in your child's grade, treating them to pizza, popcorn, and a movie at night before tucking them in and giving them breakfast in the morning. What could be more fun?! Let your child be the host of this special event, which is sure to be a memorable one. Date and time in the early spring to be mutually agreed upon. Years after he wrote his books, Theodore Seuss Geisel continues to be a favorite author for young and old alike. Whether you are a child enjoying his books for the first time or an adult finding deeper meaning in them, his talent is obvious. Born in Springfield, MA and a graduate of Dartmouth College, Geisel was a political cartoonist before he became famous for his children's books. While many of his books have a moral to them or feature a character who has integrity, empathy, or determination, Geisel said, "...kids can see a moral coming a mile off..." While his writing is fun, and even silly with made-up words, it is quite sophisticated as he wrote in a poetic meter of four rhythmic units. ...
