Final Act
Hollywood has the Academy Awards this weekend, but DCD has its own Oscar-worthy actors in the Eighth Grade. The actors and set designers created an outstanding theater experience for the school community. In spite of many snow days and thousands of lines to learn, the students brought a compelling courtroom drama to life. We will miss these charismatic actors and set designers next year but thank them for their years of hard work and dedication to the DCD drama program.

Lively Discussion Takes Place at First Parent-to-Parent Event
Twenty-two families representing all three school divisions joined together for an informal discussion and conversation at Herrick House. Gathered together in the comfortable living room, the group brainstormed discussion topics. This was followed by an open conversation facilitated by Dr. Richard Dana that resulted in lots of information exchange. New connections were made among the parents in attendance. The next Parent-to-Parent event will be held in early April.
February Challenge Update
At the end of Week 3, with only one week left, DCD is still in 5th place. If you know any alumni who graduated between 1994 and 2014 who are considering making a gift to DCD's Annual Fund, please encourage them to give in the next few days. Remember, this competition is based on participation, so gifts of all sizes count equally. Go DCD!

Read On, the DCD Library Blog
In recent years, publishers have featured many picture book biographies that bring to life historical characters that are unknown to today's children. Two fine examples of these feature women of color who faced hardship and prejudice because of their race and gender. Both women had extraordinary talent.

Little Melba and Her Big Trombone by Katheryn Russell-Brown, illustrated by Frank Morrison (Lee & Low) introduces young readers to Melba Doretta Liston (1926-1999). Melba's story is so inspiring that it seems to be fiction. ...

josephineJosephine Baker  (1906-1975) was a talented singer and dancer who also battled prejudice that was almost insurmountable. Josephine by Patricia Hruby Powell, illustrated by Christian Robinson (Chronicle) chronicles this amazing woman's struggles in the United States and triumphs in France. Even though she became one of the highest paid performers on Broadway, Josephine played roles that fit a stereotype for performers of color. ...
