February 13, 2015

DCD alumni and their parents were treated to a special preview in January of the exhibit of beautiful Shaker-inspired student work that will be on display at The Art Complex Museum in Duxbury, Massachusetts, in "Shaker Works Then and Now: Youthful Interpretations of the Shaker Form," from February 22 to May 17, 2015. For the past few weeks, the works have been lining the hallways of DCD before being shipped off to the museum. Created by DCD students in the woodshop under the artistic direction of Gerry Clifford, this extensive exhibit was made possible by the many alumni who graciously loaned their pieces. February Challenge
The February Challenge is a friendly competition among alumni from local independent schools to determine the biggest increase in participation in annual giving during the month of February. This year, gifts from the Classes of 1994-2014 are eligible. At the end of Week 2, DCD is in 5th place, and there are only two weeks left! If you know any alumni who graduated between 1994 and 2014 and are considering making a gift to DCD's Annual Fund, please encourage them to give before the end of February. Remember, this competition is based on participation, so gifts of all sizes count equally. Go DCD!

Nothing But Nets
Mrs. Leith and Mr. Edie would like to thank the 20 Lower School students and 13 Middle School students who participated in the Nothing but Nets fundraiser on February 6.   Students had a great time shooting basketball free throws and taking hockey shots on net, and parents contributed $685, bringing the DCD eight-year total to $5,130. Thank you, DCD community!

Read On, the DCD Library Blog
...This year's award and honor books are published for our older readers within that age range. It is also an unusual award year because two books, the award book and one honor book, are both written in verse. The other honor book is a biography that is written in graphic form where sequential art tells the story.

Crossover by Kwame Alexander (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) is one of those books that is just plain great. I don't usually gravitate to novels written in verse, but I knew that I had to read it because of the buzz that it was getting from all of the children's book reviewers and bloggers. Now, I can't decide who will enjoy it more - a boy who is a reluctant reader or a girl who is an avid reader. The plot and themes are that gripping.

5 Myths About The Crossover
5 Myths About The Crossover
The narrator is Josh, a boy who lives for basketball, but is also always rhyming and rapping in his head. He and his twin brother have been playing with their father, a former semi-pro player, since they could hold the ball. His parents and his brother are as fully developed as characters as Josh is. Adolescence and life present him with challenges that could be insurmountable, but Josh perseveres because of his strong family. While parts of this book are tragic, they are also uplifting because of Alexander's talented storytelling.
