A New Twist on an Old Tale
The Second Grade students enjoyed rehearsing for their class play, which they performed in the Lowell Center on February 5 and 6. They brought their own twist to the fairy tale, The Emperor's New Clothes. The Royal Family realizes that their fashion police have been stealing their beautiful clothes, so they enlist the help of some weavers and local rogues to outwit them.

Valentine's Day Messages Sent to Soldiers
A number of students in Grades 3 through 5 volunteered to give up two recess periods this week to make Valentines for soldiers and veterans through the Heartillery Group, a Boston-based non-profit organization that collects cards to show love and gratitude to our troops and help boost the spirits of soldiers stationed around  the globe. Third Grade teacher Colleen Hultgren, a friend of the group's founder, coordinated the students' efforts.

Read On, the DCD Library Blog
No, I'm not writing about The Grammy Awards or the The Oscars. The most exciting event in the world of children's literature is the annual announcement of the Caldecott Award and the Newbery Award. This past Monday wasn't just Groundhog Day, it was also when the American Library Association announced the 2015 Caldecott and Newbery winners and honor books.

It was a banner year for picture books in 2014, and the Caldecott Committee named the winner and chose 6 honor books. 6 honor books!

The Caldecott 2015 winner is The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend by Dan Santat (Little, Brown 2014).

Many children go through a stage of having an imaginary friend, and Santat's story celebrates the joy a young child may have with this special friend. Beekle helps Alice to be brave and venture into the world of real friends, which was previously "unimaginable".
