New EDP Program Announced
The Robots Are Here!
Students in Grades 3 through 5 will have a chance to learn robot technology in an "Intro to Lego Mindstorms" with EDP director Tom Nash. Tom has been using Lego Mindstorms to teach robot technology for the past five years. Lego Mindstorms are specifically designed to advance "critical thinking" and promote "fluid intelligence." Tom works with children to help them set goals, examine assumptions, evaluate and accomplish actions, and assess conclusions. Lego robots increase students' problem-solving skills by challenging them to make connections and determine and differentiate patterns.

The sessions will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:15 to 4:30 p.m. December 2-18. Watch the short film below of past creations made in his classes. Click here for a registration form.

When you shop at smile.amazon.com, you'll find the same products, prices, and service as you do on Amazon.com, with the added bonus that the AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price of your eligible purchases to DCD. On your first visit to AmazonSmile, select DCD from among the charitable organizations listed before you begin shopping.

ShopWithScrip
Coming Next Week, Just in Time for Black Friday!
Scrip is another new way to fundraise for DCD while you shop. Scrip gift cards are the same gift cards you can purchase from retailers. With over 300 of the country's biggest brands, including grocery and department stores, gas stations, restaurants, hotels and home improvement stores. You don't need to purchase anything you don't need! DCD earns money with each gift card purchase. You'll receive more information about using Scrip next week.
News from the Classrooms
A Tree-mendous Opportunity!
First Graders had a tree-mendous time at Moose Hill exploring the trails of the Wildlife Sanctuary. Building on their study of trees, they examined pine cones, acorns, and chestnuts to learn about the different types of seedpods produced by deciduous and conifer trees. They also participated in a scavenger hunt to learn about the various tree species and their leaves. Did you know that you could identify a sassafras leaf by its lemony smell? The First Graders do!
Fifth Graders Visit the Egyptian Collection at the MFA
To enhance their study of Egypt, Fifth Graders explored the Egyptian collection at the MFA, where they viewed artifacts from the ancient civilization from four thousand years ago, including statues, a burial temple with tomb painting on the walls, and a huge stone sarcophagus decorated with the Eye of Horus on the side. The highlight of the visit was seeing the mummies.

When Mary Pope Osborne wrote the first book in the Magic Tree House Series, it's a fair guess that even she couldn't imagine the number of readers whom she would reach.

din

Dinosaurs Before Dark
introduced young readers to a brother and sister, Jack and Annie, "who discover a magical tree house filled with books". This was the first of many adventures that our young heroes have. Fifty-two books later, children are as enamored with the formula as ever. The joy of these books is that our youngest non-readers enjoy having the books read to them, while our independent readers consume them on their own.

Another bonus to the Magic Tree House phenomena is that the author has also produced twenty-eight books in the Fact Tracker Series. These nonfiction companions to specific titles explore more information about the subject of a title in the original series. For example, Ancient Greece and the Olympics is the companion to Magic Tree House #16: Hour of the Olympics.
