Nikkei woman publishes her mother's internment experiences

Mary Y Nakamura releases 'White Road of Thorns'

Book captures one woman's experiences in Japanese-American internment camp

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. - "White Road of Thorns" (published by Xlibris) was written by the author Mary Y. Nakamura's mother Yamamoto Asako when she was held in Japanese internment camps. The author greatly admired her mother and wanted to pay tribute to her by having her book translated in English.

This highly immersive book is a diary of Yamamoto Asako (pen name of Aoki Hisa) from the time of the outbreak of the war between the United States and Japan, her confinement at Santa Anita, and time at Gila Relocation Center, until her selection as a passenger on the Gripsholm for the second wartime exchange of nationals between the United States and Japan. She was living in Los Angeles when the Second World War broke out.
