Tenri Gagaku Music

The word Gagaku means "Elegant Music" and is considered the oldest continuing music in the world, dating back to 700 AD.
Its roots are from China and Korea but due to political and social change, the Gagaku tradition in those countries has been lost, whereas in Japan, it has remained unchanged.
Gagaku is performed at Japanese Imperial events as well as played for religious organizations as ritual music. It has become popular among young Japanese searching for a different form of musical expression.
The Tenri Gagaku Music group in Los Angeles began in 1962 under the instruction of UCLA professor, Suenobu Togi (1932 - 2009), in the Department of Ethnomusicology.
The group continues the tradition of Gagaku for religious ceremonies and rites for the Tenrikyo Church and in Japanese festivals around Los Angeles.
Open Day is the last Sunday of every month (except December). Reservations can be made on the website for $7.50, or pay $10.00 cash or check upon arrival (12 and under free). The garden is wheelchair accessible. No pets allowed.
