International Peace & Humanity Day in San Diego, Aug 05, 07

Forwarded for San Diego WISH

"International Peace & Humanity Day 2015" will be presented by SD-WISH (San Diego-Worldwide Initiative to Safeguard Humanity) in collaboration with Unified Port of San Diego, City of Coronado, and Japanese Friendship Garden of San Diego on Aug 05 and 07.

SD-WISH invites you to come together to promote peace & harmony among all people, cultures, and nations. Our main purpose is to educate and inspire communities, kids, youth, families, and leaders for future generations on how to collaborate with people from different backgrounds.

The International Peace & Humanity Day is free and open to the public - all ages are welcome.   www.sdwish.org

Part I: Ceremony - Wednesday, Aug 05, from 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm - Yokohama Friendship Bell on Shelter Island, 1402 Shelter Island Dr. San Diego, CA 92106

The atomic bomb droppings on Hiroshima on August 6th and on Nagasaki on August 9th 1945 were the last live use of nuclear weapons in history.

August 5th 2015 (August 6th in Japan time) will mark the 70th anniversary of the bombings and hence 70 years of freedom from nuclear weapon usage.

SD-WISH invites you to join us on the beautiful Shelter Island for an afternoon of commemoration as we gong the Friendship Bell to celebrate this freedom and send our WISH for eternal peace. Community members and leaders share their messages of dedication to peace, understanding and tolerance.

Golden Rule  Peace Boat

The historic Golden Rule peace boat, restored by Veterans For Peace and many friends, has set sail from Eureka to San Diego. The 30-foot boat and its crew ignited an international movement to stop the atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons in 1958, when they attempted to sail into a nuclear bomb test zone in the Marshall Islands.

For the 70th anniversary of the Hiroshima & Nagasaki atomic bombings, the restored Golden Rule sets sail arriving at Shelter Island just in time for our Ceremony on August 5th.  See the boat nearby the Yokohama Friendship Bell as it joins the beautiful San Diego scenery for our event.

Part II: Floating of Paper Lanterns - Friday, Aug 07, from 6:00 pm - 8:45 pm - Coronado City Council Chambers / Community Pool, 1825 Strand Way Coronado, CA 92118

Adopting a traditional Japanese ceremony tōrō nagashi (tōrō means "lantern" and nagashi means "cruise, flow"), we celebrate peace and humanity by floating paper lanterns with written messages to the world as a hope or WISH for global peace and well-being.

We invite guests to write messages on paper lanterns and enjoy a relaxing San Diego evening at the waterside Coronado City Council Chambers patio along with light food, refreshments, origami, exhibits, presentations, and live music - a wonderful experience to gather and celebrate with fellow community members and leaders.

You can make and float your very own paper lantern (materials will be supplied for free) and you're welcome to take it home with you at the end of the evening. Yukata are welcome!

Special Film Screening Event: "Pictures from a Hiroshima Schoolyard" - Wednesday, Aug 05, at 7:30 pm -Town & Country Resort & Convention Center (Regency Ball Room) 500 Hotel Cir N, San Diego, CA 92108 (Learn More)

A collection of surprisingly joyful drawings created by school children living among the ruins of Hiroshima in 1947 becomes the heart and soul of this true, inspiring story about an exchange of gifts between Americans and Japanese after a devastating war.

This powerful documentary about reconciliation and the power of gift, introduces the children artists (now in their late 70s) who reflect on their early lives amidst the rubble of their destroyed city and the hope they shared through their art.

In 2010, the newly restored drawings, buried for decades deep inside All Souls Church in Washington DC, are taken back to Japan where they are reunited with the artists and exhibited in the very building where they were created.
