Never Again - 70th Hiroshima Anniversary Vigil at Santa Monica, Aug 05 at 4:15PM

 

 

"Never Again," an event to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, will be held on Wednesday, August 5 at 4 pm sharp at the Chain Reaction peace sculpture(*) at 1800 block of Main Street in Santa Monica.

 

Parking available in lot at 1821 Main Street (closest) or structure at 333 Civic Center Drive

 

A moment of silence will be observed at 4:15 pm, the exact time the first bomb was dropped over Hiroshima (8:15 am August 6 in Japan local time.) A ceremonial Buddhist bell will be rung seven times for each decade that has passed since the bombings.

 

Physicians for Social Responsibility-Los Angeles, American Society for Hiroshima-Nagasaki A-Bomb Survivors, Pax Christi, and eleven more social justice organizations participate in this event.

 

Junji Sarashina, member of the American Society of Hiroshima-Nagasaki A-Bomb Survivors, will speak of his experiences during the Hiroshima bombing. Reverend Ryuzen Hayashi of the Koyasan Buddhist Temple will present the Hiroshima Peace Flame, brought from Hiroshima to Los Angeles by former Mayor Tom Bradley in 1989.

 

Other speakers include Dr. Jimmy Hara, a board member of Physicians for Social Responsibility-Los Angeles, journalist Robert Scheer, Editor-in-Chief of TruthDig who has covered nuclear issues since the Cold War, and other public health and interfaith leaders. 

 

The event is also intended to increase public awareness of current nuclear threats and build upon growing support to ban and eliminate nuclear weapons.
