Opening Reception, Sunday, July 5, 1 -3 PM

Meeting with artists, lecture and demonstration on the art of Nihonga painting

Nihonga is a style of painting created in accordance with traditional Japanese artistic conventions, techniques and materials. The term Nihonga was coined in the Meiji period of the Imperial Japan, to distinguish its style from oil paintings.

Late Nihonga artist Robert Crowder of Beverly Hills had studied under Nihonga master Shunko Mochizuki before WWII. In order to commemorate Mr. Crowder, the Robert Crowder Award was established in 2013 by the Robert Crowder Foundation in Los Angeles and Japan's Nihonga-In association in which Shunko Mochizuki was a founding member in 1938.

This year, as the second year of the Robert Crowder Award, the first Los Angeles exhibition of Japan's Nihonga-In will be presented at Doizaki Gallery of the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center in Los Angeles.

The exhibition will include artworks by Eriko Urano who is the Robert Crowder Award winner in 2015.

The Japanese American Cultural and Community Center is located at 244 South San Pedro Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012. www.jaccc.org
