UCLA The Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance MFA Upstart Seriespresents Spall Fragments, an original 90 minute dramatic action concert that reckons with hyper-masculine culture in Japan and America.
Spall Fragments hammers the audience with the explosive sound and high precision of Japanese taikodrumming, the arranged space and bodies of postmodern contemporary choreography, and the nonsensical dialogue of comedic theatre.
Spall Fragments features a cast of five performers. Joining choreographer /composer Joe Smallon stage are: Bevin Chanand Young Kangmembers of the collegiate taiko drum group UCLA Yukai Daiko; Yeeman Mui, a member of the professional Kenny Endo Taiko Ensemble; and dancer Barry Brannum.
Spall Fragments features eight major pieces including Tama ni Kizu a dance solo recombining classical and folk Japanese dance forms with elements of contemporary dance; Shadowing Sukeroku, centered upon the flamboyant drumming of Old Tokyo atop rock and Kabuki theatre rhythms; Good Day 2B a Bad Man II a dialogue referencing macho action movies of Hollywood; and Bounding - a full-ensemble engagement of rapid-fire interplay between dual drumsets and two Ohiradaiko massive taiko drums measuring over three feet in width and painstakingly carved from single tree trunks.
