Award-winning Polish cellist Marek Szpakiewicz will perform at a recital in memory of 2011 Japan's earthquake and tsunami disaster victims on Saturday, March 7, at 7:00 p.m. at Munson Recital Hall at Azusa Pacific University.

The programs are:
Dvorak (arranged by Szpakiewicz): Slavonic Dances in E minor, Op.72, No.2
Chopin: Cello Sonata in G minor, Op.65
Shostakovich: Cello Sonata in D minor, Op.40
Piazzolla: Le Grand Tango

Suggested donations are $15 per person.
All proceeds from the March 7 recital will be used to purchase a 1/2-sized cello for Soma Children's Orchestra & Chorus in Fukushima Prefecture in Japan.
Soma is among the disaster areas of the East Japan Great Earthquake and Tsunami and subsequent nuclear power station accident in March 2011.
Soma Children's Orchestra & Chorus is supported in technically and financially from Friends of El Sistema Japan, part of the El Sistema music educational programs worldwide.
Since the inception of Soma Children's Orchestra and Chorus, Mr. Szpakiewicz has been supporting the program, and last November, he visited Soma to share his musical guidance and performance.
On March 27 at Ginza Oji Hall in Tokyo, Mr. Szpakiewicz will play the same program at Azusa Pacific University for the Japanese audience. The portion of the proceeds from his Tokyo concert also will go to Soma Children's Orchestra & Chorus.
