John Sachen is an Arizona born and raised Phoenician, who has lived in Japan for nearly 30 years.

John received recognition in an Arizona State competition for his first haiku while in the 2nd grade in Phoenix area but it wasn't until he moved to Tokyo in his early 20's where he continued pursuing his interest in composing haiku, but this time in Japanese language.

In a Japan nationwide haiku contest for foreigners, John's haiku were selected and he was awarded a trip to the city of Matsuyama, home to the renowned haiku poet Masaoka Shiki, to participate in workshops and do a home stay with a local haiku poet in Ehime prefecture.

Throughout John's years in Japan and his love for nature and travel around the world, John continues to have fun composing haiku poetry in English and Japanese languages.

Though haiku has a simple structure and relatively easy to compose, the key is to clearly write one which the reader can experience the momentary scene or insight that inspired the author.

John recently moved back to Phoenix with his family and he hopes to raise interest in haiku among children and adults across the Arizona State by initiating the Haiku Expo as a new event at the Arizona Matsuri scheduled for Feb. 21-22, 2015.
