Now recruiting for the next class of Sanctuary Stewards!

Read about Dee's experience as a Steward:
"One of the most fulfilling aspects of my new life in Santa Cruz is my life as a Sanctuary Steward. Just this week, I ran a beach cleanup with a group of 6th graders at Twin Lakes State Beach. After engaging in a brief presentation on marine debris, these future world leaders donned their cloth gloves, grabbed their green recycled buckets, and set-out with great conviction to pick-up even the smallest pieces of plastic that harm our planet's marine life. It was reassuring to see that the health of the world's oceans is in such determined little hands. In that very moment, I experienced an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the opportunity to Save Our Shores in my beautiful, new backyard - Monterey Bay."

Advocacy Update
| |
Local Styrofoam bans become toughest in the nation! The City of Capitola, the City of Santa Cruz, and the County of Santa Cruz have each amended their Styrofoam bans to prohibit retail sales of Styrofoam plates, cups, bowls, peanuts AND coolers. These are the strictest polystyrene bans in the nation, sending a clear message that our coastal communities will stop at nothing to preserve the Monterey Bay National
Marine Sanctuary.
On October 23, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors approved the Regional San Mateo Bag Ban for unincorporated parts of the County. This action now paves the way for the eighteen incorporated cities within San Mateo County, as well as the six incorporated cities within Santa Clara, to move forward and pass bag bans at the local level.
Help us win the fight against plastic pollution!

Protect the ocean food chain!
As a vital food source for ospreys, bottlenose dophins, and endangered humpback whales, menhaden are a small fish with an enormous impact.
They are also among the most overfished species in the sea, having decreased by 88% over the last 25 years! Menhaden are primarily ground up for products such as pet food, fertilizer, and fish oil supplements. And a single $100 million corporation, Omega Protein, takes more than 400 million pounds of these vital fish out of the Atlantic every year. This can't continue.

MPA Creature Feature: the Spiny Lobster
| |
We love reading MPA success stories. Check out this feature of the Spiny Lobster from our friends at the CA MPA
In a scientific study in California's Channel Islands, where marine protected areas have been in place for 10 years, Kay et al. (2012) compared lobster catches in marine reserves to non-reserve sites. The study found that lobsters were more abundant and larger in the marine protected areas.
