Summer Learning Program

Did you know that......

  • All students experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer.
  • On average, students lose approximately 2.6 months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills during the summer months.
  • Research shows that teachers typically spend between 4 to 6 weeks re-teaching material that students have forgotten over the summer.

Summer is a time for a break from school and hopefully lots of time spent with family and friends - vacations, reunions, travel or just playing together. But make sure to throw a little summer learning into the mix. This blog discusses our weekly/daily checklist of grade appropriate summer activities for grades K-12.

  

  

  Things To Celebrate This Month
June brings Child Vision Awareness Month, Father's Day, the First Day of Summer, and much more. You never know what wonderful resources you can find to enrich your classroom experience. Let's get started!

  

 

 

Black Music MonthCelebrate music and influential African American musicians, from jazz musicians to singers and songwriters.

 

Child Vision Awareness Month- Did you know that 25 percent of school-aged children have vision problems? Make sure to get your child's eyes checked before starting school this fall. Here are some great tips and resources for parents. If your child does have vision problems, I4C also has resources for the visually impaired.

 

World Environment Day (6/6)- Protect nature and the Earth not only today but every day! Find out about how human activities affect the environment. Learn about conserving resources. Here are some great activities about recycling you can do in the classroom and at home.

 

Flag Day (6/14)- Did you know that we celebrate Flag Day today because on this day in 1777, the Continental Congress adopted our national flag? Find history about the U.S. flag, lesson plans, crafts, and more on our Flag Day page.

 

Father's Day (6/21) - Did you know that Father's Day wasn't an official holiday until 1966? Honor all the fathers in your life today with Father's Day crafts, printables, recipes, and celebration ideas.

 

First Day of Summer (6/21)- Happy Summer Solstice! Find out what causes the change of seasons. You can find fun and educational summer activities here. Don't forget to sign up for our Free Summer Learning Program to minimize students' learning loss and to keep them engaged all summer.

 

Ramadan Begins (6/29) - Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset and this period of spiritual reflection and purification lasts an entire month. Learn more about the holiday and its history and find activities and recipes on our Ramadan resource page.

Internet4Classrooms now offers Online Practice Tests and Interactives, covering Kindergarten to Sixth Grade Common Core Mathematics. Look for a rapidly growing variety of thousands of practice quizzes tied to the Common Core State Standards, School Subjects, Activities, and Holidays.

  App Of The Month

The App of the Month for June is Quizlet. With the end of the school year approaching quickly this month's app aims to help students make studying for End of Course exams and finals easier. Quizlet makes simple tools that let you study anything, anywhere. You can play games to study, create your own flashcards (or search millions created by others), improve your study habits, or study with images and audio. The app makes studying easy for all learning styles. Download Quizlet for an Apple or an Android device.

 

Compatibility: Varies with Android device. Requires iOS 7.0 or later and is optimized for iPhone 5 and later.

Internet4Classrooms offers a wide variety of informative online resources, tips, tools, and tutorials regarding your classroom needs. There is always something you can utilize with your students. Each month we'll feature a few links to useful topics.

Take the time this summer to prep for next year. A great way to do that is to get acquainted with technology you can use in your classroom. Try these great iPad apps that can benefit you in the classroom. Also, learn how social media can be used to your advantage.

Don't Forget: Free Online Practice for ACT Test and SAT Test Resources.  I4C now offers free SAT and ACT vocabulary and math quizzes. Become a free member and log in as much as you'd like. Students can take practice tests on 5000 vocabulary words.Take daily practice math quizzes on over 1000 questions.  Log in to monitor your students' scores - including seeing which vocabulary words or math questions they missed. Interactive quizzes allow the test taker to retake and study as much as they want.

Check out our Common Core English Language Arts Standards. Each Grade Level is full of resources for every individual standard. Students can take control of their own learning by clicking on the page with the standard number, and choosing their own resource to practice that skill. Click on your Grade Level to find English Language Arts Standard Resources and learning tools.

  Technology Tips

Tech Tip #1: Protect Documents from Edits

  

Sending out a document and don't want anyone to edit it? On Microsoft Office, you can protect your documents from edits. Go to the Review tab and click on Protect. You can edit what can and can't edit on your document. More Office tips here. 

 

  

Tech Tip #2: Find and Replace

 

Don't forget about this quick way to fix your document! CTRL+F will get you the Find/Replace domain box. Type in any error you are looking for and the correction that you need. You can select "replace all" and it will fix everything with one click! Go here for a list of Microsoft help tools. 

 

  

Tech Tip #3: ID Any Image!

 

Did you know that you can look up the source of a picture through Google? Just drag the picture on to the Google homepage and find out where it's from! Other tech help.
