This week at Christ Church
Fall Happy Hour
Tomorrow, Thursday, September 24
 First fall happy hour at
Spiros Gyros.
Fall in Coronado is the best. The weather is perfect and most of our summer guests have returned home; it's just a little bit less hectic. To make the most of this lovely time, we'll meet at the newly remodeled Spiro's Gyros at the Ferry Landing on Thursday, September 24 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. They have a lovely new patio area overlooking the bay and plenty of yummy treats.

Adult Forums
9:00 a.m. - Hinde Hall
Forum
Anne Bridgers will present this Sunday's forum - "All God's Creatures" Will my dog go to heaven and other theological queries.

Next week we're looking forward to the return of our Fellowship Fare breakfast at 9:00 a.m. We Believe...that breakfast is the most important meal of the day!

Karibu sana Monica
Welcome to the Mainwarings
Make sure to RSVP
for this event.
Karibu sana means welcome in Swahili, and you'll want to welcome Monica and the rest of the Mainwaring family as they present stories and a slide show from their time in Tanzania this summer. One of the first things you'll learn is that Monica's last name, Mainwaring, is pronounced mannering. A bit counter intuitive but easy enough.  Come for an early supper - baked potato and salad bar and, of course, a yummy desert to savor while you listen to the stories of their journeys. This Sunday evening September 27 at 5:00 p.m.; bring the whole family but please RSVP, if you would, for our food count.

4th Annual Lion's Chase
Run for Casa de Amor and build hope for families in need.
Join the Amor Lion Chase 5k Fun Run/Walk benefiting families in Mexico through the Casa de Amor house- building program. The 4th Annual Lion Chase 5k is a fantastic opportunity to run right here in Coronado - this Saturday, September 26.

The Lion Chase 5k will raise funds to make the dream of having a home a reality for impoverished families in Mexico. Amor is the group that our diocesan youth built homes with this summer. Amor builds homes alongside families who are faced with systemic poverty, a "lion" that is constantly bearing down on them. These families are subjected to weather conditions, sleeping on dirt floors, and living with walls that do not keep out the cold. By providing them a safe, dry place to call home, you break the cycle of poverty.

Breakfast burritos at Christ Church after the race
Christ Church youth and the young at heart are encouraged to join the RUN and FUN!  Registration fees until the day of the race are $35. You can register here.

The race begins and ends in Tidelands Park, and afterwards there will be breakfast burritos in Hinde Hall. If you're going to join in, contact Charlette Preslar to let her know!

Blessings of the Animals
Celebrate St. Francis Day
Look for our "pet treat" bags this Sunday to hand out as an invitation your friends and neighbors to the Blessing of the Animals in celebration of St. Francis Day, next Sunday, October 4 at 3:00 p.m. We'll gather in the courtyard for a quick service and individual blessing for each pet, then fire up the grill for hot dogs, hush puppies, and drinks. We're joining CCDS in their Pennies for PAWS collection, so bring your pennies to church; there will be collection box at coffee table. This is a wonderful community-wide gathering for everyone who shares their life with an animal companion.

News and Updates
Keeping Up with Tom
Deacon Morelli moves on...
Effective immediately Bishop Mathes has re-assigned The Rev. Tom Morelli from Christ Church to a special diocesan assignment which may last three months or more. He will be missed here, but we know his talents will be put to good use.

What's in a Name?
 A helpful reminder
Just a reminder to please wear your name badge every week. We're very pleased to have Monica with us, but she is just getting to know everyone and having your name badges on will be a big help to her and to all our newcomers. If you are in need of a name badge fill out an application at the Welcome Center on Sunday. New badges are ordered about once every other month and they're just $10.

Vida Joven Support
A new partnership
This year, Youth and Family Ministry is offering children an opportunity to sponsor a child at Vida Joven. Every other month Vida Joven will send us a picture and the story of one of the kids that live there. The goal is to raise $25 every month to send to Vida Joven. Each week parish children bring spare change or part of their allowance to Sunday School and put their donation in "La Casa de Vida Joven". At the end of each month, we will bless the donations during the 10:00 a.m. service and send it to Vida Joven.

Service & Outreach
Helping Hand Bags
Distributed at the Pop-Up Shop
As part of our commitment to the Diocesan Day of Service project at St Mark's, we would like to provide hygiene bags for everyone who comes to get clothes at our "shop." Pick up a bag to fill with the items listed (and anything else you may want to add!), and return it to Christ Church next Sunday, October 4. Items for bags: small comb; disposable razor; travel size shampoo; travel size body wash or bar soap; travel size body or baby powder; toothbrush; travel size toothpaste; chap stick; travel size lotion or sunscreen.

Pop-Up Shop for the Homeless
Just bring one!
Don't feel you have to clean out your closet to contribute gently-used clothing for the Pop-Up Shop - just aspire to bring one thing. If everyone brought one thing to donate we'd have over 200 items on one Sunday alone! Look for the box in the courtyard; next Sunday is the last day for the collection. We will be sorting the clothing after the 10:00 a.m. service on Sunday, October 4. Just stop by Hinde Hall to help out.

The Pop-Up Shop is our contribution to the Diocesan Day of Service.
Christ Church is partnering with St. Mark's, St. James, Good Samaritan, and St. John's to host this "shopping" event for our homeless and low-income brothers and sisters served by St. Mark's Neighborhood Pantry - Sunday, October 11, 2:00-5:00 p.m. The event at St. Mark's also will include mobile showers, hygiene kits, and Cal Fresh and Medi-Cal information. Many volunteers will be needed the day of - if you can help out contact Sarah Shealy Stump.

Weekly Food Donation
Help with non-perishable food
Any and all donations to the St. Mark's Neighborhood Food Pantry are appreciated; your
Del Monte veggies
Bring canned veggies
this Sunday.
contributions each week are very important to help ensure the pantry is well-stocked. St. Mark's has seen visitor numbers steadily increase in the last year. Our items are delivered to St. Mark's each Wednesday...so contribute if you can:
  • September 27 - canned veggies (low salt if possible)
  • October 4 - Cereal, oatmeal, breakfast bars (low sugar)
  • October 11 - Thanksgiving food drive begins (see below)

Feel free to continue your donations for the food pantry - bringing non-perishable items - canned protein, canned soups, stews, veggies, rice, beans, etc. We'll start up with a new weekly list after Thanksgiving. Thank you for your continued support.

Thanksgiving Food Drive
Just around the corner
Happy Thanksgiving
Geez - it's still 80+ degrees out and the end of daylight savings is still a month away; how in the world can we be talking about Thanksgiving! Well...it takes us over a month to collect all of the items we include in our Thanksgiving bags, and we need to give our partners at least two weeks to distribute them to their clients. Believe it or not that brings us back to our start date of October 11. Look for the food item list in the next few weeks. Yay - pumpkin pie.

The Diocese and Beyond
Mayor's Dinner
Commemorative Dinner Program
Coronado's culmination of its 125th anniversary celebration  will be topped off with the Mayors' Dinner held at the Hotel del Coronado on December 11, 2015. For this special event the dinner program committee is inviting families who have been a part of Coronado's fabric to submit a family photo and a short history. Your submission will be published in the commemorative Mayors' Dinner Program Booklet. This booklet will serve as a keepsake celebrating Coronado's history. Please submit your story of approximately 400 words or less by September 30 as time and space are limited for this celebratory opportunity.  The cost for a full page in the program is $125. For more information contact Cindy Wilson.
