This week at Christ Church
Instructed Eucharist
Step-by-step worship
If you're new to the Episcopal church or just would appreciate a refresher course on what we do at worship, you'll want to attend the Instructed Eucharist at the 10:00 a.m. service this Sunday, September 6. The bulletin will have prompts and clergy will explain what we're doing and why. This is the week before Sunday school begins so families are encouraged to bring their children as this is a wonderful learning experience for all.

Take Sunday School for a Whirl
Registration  continues this Sunday!
Christ Church Sunday school begins next Sunday,  September 13. This year we'll have Godly Play, Whirl, and Echo the Story - offerings for all ages. Registration continues this Sunday. If working with children is your thing you can volunteer as little as once a month and share these wonderful curricula with the youngest members of our parish. Talk with  Charlette Preslar, Director of Youth and Family Ministries, about all of our Christian education opportunities for youth this fall. Look for the Youth and Family Ministries table in the courtyard.

Are you receiving the weekly Family/Faith/Friends/Fun newsletter? If not make sure to contact Charlette so you can keep up-to-date with all the fun happenings.

Homecoming Sunday
Next Sunday September 13
In most communities September is the month that summer vacations conclude, the school year begins, and everyone returns to church with vigor. Although many Coronadoans choose September to finally go on vacation, we hope most of you will be here for "Homecoming" Sunday on September 13. We'll have a continental breakfast at 9:00 a.m. as we ramp up to the first official Fall Fellowship Fare event on October 4. Sunday school will begin and all are invited to attend the Adult Forum where this year's educational events under the banner of Praying Shapes Believing will be unveiled. We hope to see y'all there. As always, nursery is available at 8:45 a.m. for parents with youngsters, who would like to attend.

CPR Class at Christ Church
Save a life - you can do it!
Refresh your CPR skills
Christ Church possess two AED units that can help save a life in a cardiac emergency. Do you know where there are located? Could you use one if called upon? You can learn all about this life saving device and more at the CRP training that is being held at Christ Church on Wednesday, September 16 from 2:30-6:30 p.m. The cost is $50 per person. The class can accommodate 40; the day school and some of the church staff will be in attendance but there are numerous openings still available. If you would like to sharpen up your skills contact the parish office to reserve a spot.

Prayer Flag Workshop
Material scraps needed
We're creating prayer flags
To complement our celebration of International Day of Peace, Sunday, September 20 we will be creating prayer flags to adorn the courtyard. Wikipedia says this about the prayer flag, Traditionally, prayer flags are used to promote peace, compassion, strength, and wisdom. The flags do not carry prayers to gods, which is a common misconception; rather, the Tibetans believe the prayers and mantras will be blown by the wind to spread the good will and compassion into all pervading space. Therefore, prayer flags are thought to bring benefit to all.

The prayers of a flag become a permanent part of the universe as the images fade from exposure to the elements. Just as life moves on and is replaced by new life, Tibetans renew their hopes for the world by continually mounting new flags alongside the old. This act symbolizes a welcoming of life's changes and an acknowledgment that all beings are part of a greater ongoing cycle.

You are invited to attend the workshop on Saturday, September 19 from 10:00-11:30 a.m. in Hinde Hall and work with others to create as many flags as we can. You are also invited to help gather materials for the flag making. If you have scraps of material 6" x 6" that you can donate; bring them to church or the parish office.

Give Peace a Chance
How are you celebrating? Here's what we have planned....
null
We have special things planned for this year's International Day of Peace - we'll be planning and working during the month of September towards our special day, Sunday, September 20. We're planning a "Piece for Peace" bake sale, peace/prayer flag making, a special speaker, and the dedication of our very own peace pole, with smaller peace poles and peace sign window clings for your very own. If you'd like to bake for the bake sale, contact Sarah Shealy Stump.

Fall Happy Hour
Thursday, September 24
First fall happy hour at Spiros Gyros.
Fall in Coronado is the best. The weather is perfect and most of our summer guests have returned home; it's just a little bit less hectic. To make the most of this lovely time we'll meet at the newly remodeled Spiro's Gyros at the Ferry Landing on Thursday, September 24 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. They have a lovely new patio area overlooking the bay and plenty of yummy treats.

News and Updates
Music Ministry Gears Up
Back in the saddle soon....
Both the choir and handbell choir will begin rehearsals Thursday evening, September 10. The choir will return to worship next Sunday, September 13 and we look forward to welcoming them back. The Hand Bell choir will be rehearsing for a holiday offering. If you have an interest in music here at Christ Church contact Donna Grandi to find out how to get involved.

Did You Know?
Unsung Heros at Christ Church
Elizabeth Otten
As with so many parishioners who generously give of their time and talent behind the scenes, you many not recognize Elizabeth Otten. Elizabeth is the sister of Hank Otten.  She lives over the bridge in Chula Vista and attends the 8:00 a.m. Sunday service. She has been here every Thursday morning for many years, carefully attending to our Christ Church library. She took it upon herself to clean and organize our very neglected collection and bring us into the 21st century by cataloging everything into a library computer program. Elizabeth took the time each week to select resources that were applicable to the season, current events, and/or educational offerings. She lovingly placed these on the portable book cart that was wheeled out each Sunday so parishioners might learn and be enlightened. Elizabeth has recently moved to Fredricka Manor and will be attending St. John's, Chula Vista. We thank her with our whole heart and will miss her. We wish her well on her new adventure and hope she comes back to visit often. Take a moment to sign the thank you card that will be at the Welcome Center this Sunday.

Knit One Pray Too
Knitting for one and all
Not just for experts.
Knitting's not just for grandmas in rocking chairs. All ages and genders have found joy with needles and yarn. Christ Church has a group that meets on Tuesday afternoons to knit - they work on prayer shawls and prayer squares to comfort parishioners in need. Discussion about expanding the program is underway; perhaps adding an CCDS after school club, offering a evening meeting once a month, even knitting caps for the homeless or our deployed troops.

Knitting is open to anyone in the community; attendance at Christ Church is not a criteria. So if you have friends or neighbors that might like to join in, share this information with them. Contact the parish office to let us know you're interested.

Service & Outreach
Pop-Up Shop for the Homeless
Donations needed
October 11, 2015 is our Diocesan Day of Service. Each church is being asked to do something out of the ordinary that day to serve others. Christ Church is partnering with St. Mark's, St. James, Good Samaritan, and St. John's to host a Pop-up Clothing Shop for our homeless and low-income brothers and sisters served by St. Mark's Neighborhood Pantry.  We need donations of gently used clothes - jeans, sweatshirts, t-shirts, coats, jackets, socks, etc. Look for the box in the courtyard each Sunday in September or bring your donations to the parish office.

4th Annual Lion's Chase
Run for Casa de Amor and build hope for families in need
Join the Amor Lion Chase 5k Fun Run/Walk benefiting families in Mexico through the Casa de Amor house building program. The 4th annual Lion Chase 5k is a fantastic opportunity to run right here in Coronado - Saturday, September 26

The Lion Chase 5k will raise funds to make the dream of having a home a reality for impoverished families in Mexico. Amor is the group that our diocesan youth built homes with this summer. Amor builds homes alongside families who are faced with systemic poverty, a "lion" that is constantly bearing down on them. These families are subjected to weather conditions, sleeping on dirt floors, and living with walls that do not keep out the cold. By providing them a safe, dry place to call home you break the cycle of poverty.

Christ Church will have a group running in the 5K - registration fees until the day of the race are $35. You can register here. The race begins and ends in Tidelands park and afterwards there will be breakfast burritos in Hinde Hall. If you're going to join in contact Charlette Preslar to let her know!
